They are lying in the Van in their condos, along with my pleasant, though not to used to this hunting thing, dog Annie.

I will warn all who hunt with Hammack- Where your walking boots, carry extra water and shells, maybe lunch. And be quick about it. That sum bi***, can cover more miles in less time than anyone I know.

He'd be out of the Van- or "buggy" as he called it, load his 90, and be shooting at birds before the fellow riding shot gun had even got out of the van! Then as the last of us could exit the van, he'd be a quarter of a mile away dropping into a coolee chasing the flushed birds. The man can cover some ground.

I, and I believe all, had a great time. Lots of birds, Lots of chasing, lots of good dogs, lots of laughs, lots of stories! It was great. Shot my share- and I adhered to Charles' idea that birds won't fall w/o lead in the air. So I burned through some shells.

Had good accomodations- not fancy, but clean and pleasant. Casper is a fine guide who had as much fun as we did! His son was a fine young man, that can run like a deer. Casper should be proud.

More details later.

Charles has been hunting up on Standing Rock Reservation for a few years. He invited me to go on the grouse hunt so I went. Paid my $ to the Tribal Fish and Game office, We hired Casper Thunder Hawk, to guide us (one day). The nice thing is the license is good for the entire season. So I may have to go again.

The cabins we stayed in were only 45$ a night, so with three guys in ours it was cheap! I saw thousands of pheasants on the the roadside, in fields, flushing! Hundreds of Grouse, Deer- Mulies, and Whitetail, Turkey, Prong Horn. Even a Badger. The sheer volume of wildlife was breath taking! Very nice folks, and accomodations. We hunted all the way to the northern border of the Res near the Cannonball River, and hunted in SD Reservation Grounds. Just simply amazing time. Of course I just love to be outdoors and hunting. Anything beats the office. Glad to give you more info if you need/want it.

Ash,

How much is the license on the reservation? Do you still have to buy the North Dakota hunting license as well?

An outlay of all your related expenses sure would help us to evaluate the feasability of a future trip to the Reservation.

License was 65$ grouse/dove
Pheasant is 75$ all are full season. If you don't plan to hunt on non Standing Rock ground you don't need a ND, or SD license.
We stayed at cabins near mobridge on the Res for 45$ a night. sleeps 4-6 but the 5 & 6th is a Futon that they will share, the others are bunk beds.

Guides run 75-125 per gun. We bought much of our food at the grocery and ate sandwiches, oatmeal (the cabins have stoves/pots etc), nuts and fruit during the hunt. We ate at two casinos 8.95, 12.95 for the buffett, and a pizza joint in mobridge 8.95.

Including Gas (split 5 ways), I spent less than 300$ Not counting the license. I thought it was a real bargin!

Just remember the hunting was really bad and you wouldn't want to waste your time up there. Try some South Georgia Pheasant hunting, Maybe some Alaskan Quail hunts, California Ptarmigan.....

I don't have the contact info for our guide but Charles might be willing to share it, maybe not... Some things are better kept to ones self Cool.

I may try a week with weekends to bookend the hunt next year. Just too much fun to be had in one place.

I'm planning on going back whenever I can get my Truck filled with 4 hunters to save on the gas, and when my wife gives me the all clear! Can't spend too much time away from her, or the kids. Every time I get home I check to make sure the toilet seat is down, and no one is hiding under the bed! I learned that when I was working on the boats in Alaska. So far no problems. She even gave me a hug and a smile when I got back! I guess she likes the house to stay neat, and it gives her a chance to rearrange the furniture and paint. I'm just glad my safe is attacted to the floor-- or she'd have it moved to the garage.

Ash has pretty well covered everthing, John can't type very fast and tends to keep things short. A good time was had by all and I would do it again.
Peaches was great and Cream seems to have done better every day, I think he will make it, he was great honoring Peach from a distance.
I need to get in better shape tho, and shoot a bit better.

Sounds like that was a good hunt. I just came back from N.Dak., grouse hunting was fair, I have seen better numbers, but more importantly, too hot! By noon, too hot for dogs(and me)

Saw one covey of Huns, of course that was on the road while driving not hunting. Didn't see any in the field.

But my new St Usuge pup got her first point and first "real" bird shot over her. She is a different dog than when she left home. I couldn't be prouder!

Her first bird was clubbed with a Parker 16ga with 2.5" chambers and a dose of number 7 shot.

Might give Standing Rock a go sometime. I have a pretty good deal going myself in NoDak, but looks like you guys did better.
