The three shot configuration was introduced in 1932, and I am not positive but if memory serves (hardly ever) the asterisk is the early indication of a light model or in this case a SWEET 16 compared to a standard model. Most Standard models do not have the asterisk, I may ask those who own either to look and confirm. My 1953 Standard 16 ga has the FN in the oval above the serial number but no asterisk, of course it was made 16 years later also. |

rhtx55,
Thank you sir! I wonder if the Sweet designation is part of the additional engraving. Blue Book #'s that I just stumbled upon confirm your dates, and the #96902 ~ halfway thru 1936.
Hey y'all, let me know if I start boring you with pics!

R*2- Nice lineup. Never get tired of pics! Love the 39's engraving.
rhtx55 - I don't think the "*" means "sweet" as R*2's '39 16 in question is a standard. That said, I have no idea what the "*" means.

The asterisk question, obviously I am all wet on the sweet designation. I have seen guns with and without it throughout this production range. Does anyone know if it was connected with a special order produced gun, or just the way they marked them in those few years of production before they came out with the x designation for 16-70 chambers. I haven't owned any 16-65 chambered guns but I am curious if the asterisk has any designation. |

Hi Skeettx. Your gun was made in 1939. Did you have it reblued? I envy your cylinder choked barrel - what is the length? Lets see some pics of the forend! |

Love the Browning 3 shot stamp. Looks like a fun gun! Bet it grinds 'em up on the skeet field, too. 26 or 28"? |
