Amazing and humbling to look at the collections many of you have. I’ve just entered the world of 16 ga. after spending the last few years hunting with a 20 ga.

My one and currently only 16 is a M 12 Winchester built in 1914, 2 9/16 chamber, choked full but I’ve had that changed to mod. I’m looking forward to taking it to the field pheasant hunting in two weeks.

Woe is me. Just one, an 870 express.

I try to find a reason to hate this gun -- too heavy, plain wood, and what genius gave us matte barrels? -- but after several hundred rounds of skeet, two trips this fall for Iowa pheasant and quail, and mucking around in the marshes, it's the gun I grab first. I have lighter guns, prettier guns, but none that shoot better than this ugly duckling.

It also is the gun that finally has shown me the true wisdom of 7/8 and 1 oz target and hunting loads.

My first 16, definitely not my last, but certainly the gun got me hooked on the gauge.

Odd to say, but when I get all sentimental thinking about a lifetime of hunting, three guns hold a special place: a 20 ga. pump that was a xmas gift from my parents way back when, a 12 ga. semi that was a birthday gift from my wife and kids, and, now, this 870 that I bought because I thought it just made sense.

I have 2 sixteen gauge guns at present. A graded Fox, and a Jos. Harkom. I use both for upland bird hunting in the West.

Picture of the Fox? Yep.

Hi guys, another newbie signing aboard.
I've got two Sweet Sixteens.
My Remington 870 that Dad bought me one year for Christmas, years ago - it's bagged many squirrels and a fair share of ducks. I decided on the sixteen then, because only 12 gauge was restricted to steel shot at that time. A couple years later, the 16 and 20 also had to go to steel - ah well . . .

Just a couple years ago, I began collecting bolt-action shotguns, and lucked into a pretty Kessler sixteen.

Hi, Jerry. Thanks for finding this site! Looks like a good place to talk about these fine guns!

I thought I'd already posted on this thread... Naw, that was shotgunworld Confused
My 16's:
1. A Stevens model 58 bolt action, the ugly little gun that started it all!
I've actually shot skeet with this gun, and get all kinds of cheers when I hit a double Razz
2. A Cooey model 84 single shot, A fine piece of Canadiana, identical to a Winchester 370, but no plastic or zinc parts, and an older gun with a case hardened frame and a nice walnut stock.
3. A Winchester model 12, 1954 mfg. 28 in. plain bbl. Briley thinwalls installed. My pride and joy, shot countless 25 straights with this gun.
4. An older M12 with a poly choke. I don't use this gun 'cause it shoots over a foot low at 40 yards. Gun works fine mechanically, but has been seriously monkeyed with. Evil or Very Mad
5. A new 870. Didn't need it but what the heck!

My wish list:
An Ithaca 37
A Browning citori
A Winchester 21

Dave

You Gents are way ahead of me in both quantity and quality. I have:

Revelation 350 (Stevens 94) in 16 Ga.
Remington 1148 in 16 Ga.

Just picked up my next 16. It's a Belgium guild sxs gun in excellent condition. The gun has 2 1/2" chambers thought so I need to decide what to do about it (rechamber or buy short shells). Not sure what to do?

Batman: I shot a belgian guild gun[Janssen et fils] for years until I got my Parker. I actually shot the Janssen a lot better. I left the chambers at 2 1/2" and used Westley Richards game loads in 6's, 7 1/2's and 8's for dove, squirrel and pheasant. Laughing

The question I have is: If I lenghten the chamber so that it will take 2 3/4" shells, will the gun be OK to shoot (can if handle the chamber presure of modern shells)?

Batman: That's a question that your local gunsmith will need to answer. He will need to do certain things like checking the proofmarks and measuring the wall thickness; make sure that it's a gunsmith that is familiar with vintage doubles or send it to a great one like Keith Kearcher in Bend, Ore. That's where I send all my work.
