I was reading different posts, and realize I don't really understand the structure of a hull.
What is the difference between a compression formed vs. a polyformed hull? |

Compression formed (CF) - the plastic is one solid piece, internally tapered, with the basewad formed as part of the hull. No one (that I am aware of) currently makes one for 16ga, but there are a few of the old Winchester CF hulls still around. You will occasionally see the Remington Game Load hull referred to as a 'tapered' hull but it is not CF or tapered. It has a relatively thick plastic tube that thins out a slight bit at the mouth to permit a better crimp. I guess you could call that a taper....
Polyformed hulls have a straight tube with a separate basewad pressed into the base. If you look down into the hull, you will see a line where the basewad meets the tube. The basewad is usually a different color than the tube, also. It could also be made of rolled fiber/paper.

Thanks for the information. I found some of the information on another website, but not as detailed. You cleared some things up for me.
So, essentially all my Federal, Remington, and Winchester hulls are polyformed. |

Yes. Winchester made a hull that they called 'polyformed' for a short time but it was crap imho. The current crop of 'Winchester' hulls are Cheddites.
All modern plastic 16 hulls that I have seen are of two-piece consruction, hence 'poly' formed. |

Roadkill:
Let me get this straight. The current Winchester hulls are Cheddites? So... the Cheddite hulls so often recommended by others I can get when I buy Winchester rounds? |

mrosspa: Yes. The current Winchester 16ga. hulls are Cheddites. If you are going to reload them use the Cheddite data.
