I had never tried rolling a load in these hulls, but last night I found my sizemaster wouldn't seat a primer all the way. At the end of the stroke it would just sit out an eighth or sixteenth. I tried a few and it was always iffy. When I switched back to a regular federal purple plastic high base, no problem.

They say:
Federal 2 3/4"
15/16 oz. steel No. 2

Whas'up?

Its probably that this run of hulls has a slightly smaller pocket. If the hull construction and base wad are the same, inserting a slightly tapers steel pin the same size as a WW209 will aid in swaging them out a bit. Just go easy and check frequently until you know how far in to put the pin. If its just a few hull, why bother. Toss them and be done with it.

I have found some of the Federal STEEL 16 ga hulls to be slightly longer than their standard purple hulls. Compare the hulls you are having problems with to a few different federal hulls and you might see the difference, probably why your primers aren't seating all the way.

I don't think the length of the hull would affect the priming stroke on the iszemaster. Now, maybe if the base wad is a bit short, I could see it not traveling the rest of the distance.

a shallow base wad would cause the problem. This is easy to determine with a short length of 1/2" dia. dowel cut squre. If the dowel sits deeper in the case, you have found the problem. The solution is a simple readjustment of the primer ram tube depth.

That could be the case, I know the STEEL shot federal hulls have a bit more case capacity than the standard field hulls. I always attributed it to a bit more hull lenth.
