I recently started to reload 16ga. shells using 800x. My trap loads are 1oz. with rem wads and win 209 primers. These shoot fine but really have on way of telling the performance (no chronograph). I have begun to reload a Pheasant load and I'm again using 800x with Claybuster wads and 1 1/8oz. with win 209 primers. Is there anyone out here with experience on this powder and what have shooters liked and disliked? |

Did you pick those recipes out of thin air or from a reliable load manual? A chronograph will only give an approximation of the shot string and nothing of the peak pressure generated.
Why not send some off to Tom Armbrust for pressure testing. The Low Pressure Group might even pick up the $5 a shot tab if the recipe is worthy of inclusion in our database. |

Hi wichocolab,
I have a lot of experience with 800-X.
The bad parts of 800-X are it meters poorly through most reloading machines, burns dirty, and it doesn't like the hotter primers. CCI 209 and Remington 209 STS are the best choices that I have found.
The good parts to 800-X are, excellent ballistics with heavier payloads, no possibility of powder migration and little to no drop off in cold weather.
For the 1 1/8 oz. loads I would recommend it highly, not sure about the 1 oz. loads. I can think of several better powders for 1 oz. loads than 800-X. IMR PB & SR7625, Hodgdon Universal and Alliant Green Dot and Unique would be good starting points for 1 oz. loads in the 16 Gauge and all those powder meter a lot better than 800-X.
I have several excellent loads for 800-X, if you are interested. The loads have been tested for pressure and velocity. I use 800-X in my own 1 1/8 oz. hunting loads.
Hodgdon is also a good source for 800-X data.
The link below, shows pattern results of the load that I have found to work well. The load data is in the following thread. It is listed in the first set of post as Load #4.
