Got up this morning early (staying in Russell KS) and went over to the Saline river below Wilson reservoir to hunt ducks - 8 inches of snow on the ground here. Not too cold (16 this morning, sunny and 35 later). Saw about 1000 mallards get up off the lake and go to The Feed Lot (local area that is now a preserve for waterfowl). Some geese. too. Anyway, between the three of us we shot a hen mallard and two Lesser Scaup (bluebills) that decoyed into the river (hunting in the trees - pretty cool). I shot the hen mallard with my 16 ga grade III sissytori (LM and bismuth 6s - about 30 yards). Only three birds we had a chance to shoot - we dropped them all (1 apiece).
After lunch hunted two cut milo fields with adjacent crp with 1 lab and 1 brittany - saw about 300 pheasants. All three of us shot 4 bird limits - done by 3:30. Hiking in 8 inches of snow tough, but birds hold tight. Shooting sissytori with 1 ounce paper 6s (old box winchesters with roll crimps someone gave me about 3 months ago).
GREAT day - fun had by all - forgot camera (sorry).
Tomorrow will go to another area for pheasant (and quail). Only saw 1 covey today - crossed the road in front of us into an area where no access. Supposed to be about same - 30s. Might try for some geese tomorrow afternoon.
Hunting with Stuart Young - Last Chance Wings and Labs.
Drew - sorry you did not make it to meet with Brad. |
