Just bought my first "16". An old French Charlin sliding breech which looks similar to a Darne, but uses a different locking system and looks like a sidelock with full sideplates. Talk about a smooth action, the sliding breech is tensioned on ball bearings and is impossible to describe. Had quite a few dents in stock so an afternoon of steaming relieved most of them, fortunately no gouges. Refreshed the checkering with a fine riffler, then refinished with a low gloss oil. Had split in horn buttplate reparied with some accuraglass stained to match. Finally had 2 1/2"chambers releived to 2 3/4 so I could more safely shoot available ammo. Did fairly well on some informal trap type shooting. Will probably try it in an upcoming sporting clays fundraiser for our local hospital foundation. I know it will will bring some strange looks and questions. |
