Anyone have any problems with the stock/availability of 16ga shells from their local Wal-Mart?

My local Wal-Mart usually has a few boxes of 16ga shells, from Remington & Federal. However, the selection is either #6 or #7 1/2. I bought #6's from them, but have not been able to get them to order anything other than what they already had on the shelf. I was buying #8's from Big-5, but guess I've drained their stock. They're now out of #8's and will not order them until next season. Store manager tells me he onlys orders them (Reminton GL168) for Duck season. I told him that makes no sense! First, #8's are too small for ducks, and second, their LEAD! He told me that's all they ever stock in 16ga and the only time they order. As I walked away in disgust, he claimed 16ga are just too rare. I went back to Wal-Mart and spoke with the store manager and asked if they could change their normal stock of 16ga ammo, to include #8's, or if shelf space is too premium, maybe replace the #7 1/2's with #8's. Again, I was told that they could only order what they normaly stock. He then told me that their ammunition supply is ordered and shipped, per corporate. I called the Wal-Mart corporate office and logged a formal merchandise request. I'm supposed to receive a call from a corporate manager in the next couple of business days.

I've found NO 16g shells in any of the large Wal-Marts in the Northwest valley of Phoenix.

I too have asked about the limited availability of 16 ga. shells at my local Wal-MART. They have cheap 7 1/2's and once in awhile, I see some 6's. They carry Federal bottom of the line #6 loads that I've shot and I wondered if they really had any shot in them....Wal-Mart employees disavow any power at all to have the slightest effect on what merchandise they sell or when merchandise is offered---they sound so robotic, you wonder if they are awake....My local "Big R" store (Warsaw, IN) has a better selection, consisting of Winchester #8 Dove & Quail loads, and #6 and #7 1/2 Remington Game Loads. They are priced , generally, at about $3.79/box.

In Wal-Mart's case, I don't think there is anything one could do which would motivate those people to "step outside their box" and ask upper management to consider changing the standard order, because it is this very standardization and volume purchasing which helps give them the lowest price...that is really what they are selling, price---not service...and they say so in every ad..."Always the lowest price...ALWAYS."

Up way too late tonight, but that's another story Sad Local Wal Mart, here in Merced CA (central valley) also carries the same sorry, sometimes there, sometimes not, assortment of 16 ga, Federal in #6 or #7 1/2, but at about $8 per box, they are anything but the low price leader Shocked

i've never seen a box of 16 ga amunition in any WalMart store i've been in

its all corporate

very corporate

but the sales people have been nice, i buy Winchester .45 in the 100 packs from them. i just don't ty to debate the 16 issue with them (see second and third lines
above).

I usually just go to Academy down the street and buy every box of 16 ga they have in stock, normally about 1 1/2 cases.. I asked them about ordering more, got the usual reply about they stock what they get shipped, (See lines 2 and 3 above)

and so it goes

accountants, lawyers, carp Very Happy

rayb.

The Wal Mart here in Flagstaff stocks Feds in 1oz/$4.47 and 1 1/8oz/ $8.27. Haven't looked close enough to see what shot sizes they carry.

Last year when I stopped at the Wal Mart in Liberal KS to buy my license they had the Remington green hull 1 1/8oz Express loads. They had several cases of them for $7.50/box. The first time I have ever seen these loads in a store anywhere.

I can remember finding Winny and Remi 16's at Wichita Walmarts, but it's been years; you won't find any now. Gart usually has a few boxes behind the counter, so far Dick's has always had some Remi Game Loads. Very seldom see Winnys around here any more; used to buy them cheap at Wichita Sports but they went belly up and it's now a Gart location. I always kinda liked their 1 oz. low brass for some reason.

At the local Gander Mt. I've seen Federals and Fioccis (sp?), mostly at premium prices. They carry the Kent waterfowl stuff, and I asked them about 16ga ultimate uplands; the guy looked confused and said they wouldn't be getting anything else in because "the season's winding down" Twisted Evil . I said there shouldn't be any "seasons" for a store that markets itself as hunting and fishing specialists, but I could tell by the glazed-over look in his eyes that he wasn't going to get it, so I left.

I understand Mike Murphy carries Fiocci and maybe Kent, but I haven't been there in a while (that reminds me; need to make a trip over there since it's only about 7 miles from my house!). I've never asked anybody about special-ordering for me; anybody had any luck with the "big houses" doing that?

I'm putting off getting into reloading as long as I can, so for now it's whatever I can find, mail ordering, or dipping into my celler af fine, aged, vintage 16ga loads Very Happy !

Fin

Forget Wal Mart and establish a good rapport with your local gun shop. Ask the local shop to order you 16's by the flat in whatever flavor you want. Just give the dealer enuff advance notice that he can order it in with his regular orders. That's how I get my ammo for the 16.

I'm in the same boat as clayflingythingy. The shop is closer than the big boys, they're easier to work with, and it eliminates guesswork (will they have any left by the time I get there?).

Your experience at Wall-Mart is interesting, but I think your efforts are futile. I tried it myself twice. We have several "Wally World" stores in the area and all the same. They usually have a few boxes of 1 1/8 oz Federals behind the counter but never any 1oz. Twice I've filled out one of their complaint sheets and both times I did get a response from the main office in Arkansas. The answer from the store managers is that they can only order what is available in their standard stock and apparently the 1oz load isn't in it. The answer from the corporate headquarters is they can't offer the 16 ga at the same price as the 20 gauge because they are a low production item and they just cost more.
What ever the answer really is, you are just waisting your time. The local managers are just ignorant about sporting goods and the corporate leaders just don't care. They refer you back to the local manager who knows nothing.
Take my advice, order your shells from some whaer else.

I bought the last two cases of Remington GL16 loads from the Avon Walmart 5 years ago on a closeout at $2.47 per box. Not they nor any other of the 1/2 dozen local "Wally's Follies" have restocked the GL 16 load since. However, Dick's SG stores just opened a string of stores localy and offer the GL16 loads right around bird time in the fall at very reasonable prices, especially their promo price of 2.97 per box. you might try there if you got a local one or at least one within an hour or so. Just buy in volume during the sale.

I buy in quantity from Dick's Sporting Goods as well, but I have never seen anything there but #6's and #7.5's. Probably just what they could get a deal on.

I usually buy the #7-1/2 loads and shoot trap with them. They can pound on one's pumkin a bit in a light weight gun though so I string them out over the winter. A couple of boxes a week doesn't hurt that much if I'm all dressed up for the cold. By April, I've shot them up and have enough hulls for summer skeet ammo. Works for me.

My local shop usually carries a good supply of Winchester Super-X Game Load, in 4's, 6's, & 8's ($5.99/box). They primerely stock the Winchester Super-X, in all gauges, and not much of anything else. Also, their hours are typically the same that I work. Hmmmm....Would my boss buy this as a good reason as to why I need to leave work early (need to buy ammo, to go to the range), every so often? Wal-Mart is nation wide, open late (some 24 hrs.), and on Sundays. It would be nice if they would stock the more commonly used 16ga shells (4's, 6's, & 8's) from a couple different manufacturers. I'm sure they would sell!

After shooting this am with the Sun City 'boys' out at Ben Avery, went by a new Wal-Mart Super Center. For store opening 2-3 mths ago, they had received 1 case of Federal Game-Shok 1oz 71/2's (and had sold 4 boxes) , 1 case 6's (sold none), and 1 case 1 and 1/8 6's (sold none). No clue when or what would arrive in the fall.
The Sport's Authority out here is part of Dick's and they have no 16g nor do I recall any in stock last fall. Will keep an eye on them though!
