TJC's serial dates it @ 1932. Hardly what I'd call a later Utica gun. (1930-1940).

Boy, do I feel like an idiot! After reading Larry Browns post concerning the choke markings, I looked at my notes again. It was an Ithaca not a Fox. Sorry for the confusion! I dont know why the heck I wrote Sterlingworth. Maybe Ive got them on the brain after reading all the posts about them here. Once again, sorry for the confusion.

TJC - Interesting serial number, mine is 36984x - I'll send you the whole number offline if you'd like. The information I have is 1933 and my barrels are not marked 2 3/4 or otherwise; aside from the serial number the only other markings on the barrel flats are what looks like an SP in a circle on one side and a Y on the other and it appears to be choked full and fuller. Anyone know what either mark indicates? |

rpm, we're 2x numbers apart. Small world. Mine is Lt mod/Imp mod and as I said above, no markings in regards to 23/4" chambers.
Are your chambers 23/4"? |

I don't have any calipers to measure the chokes nor do I have a chamber measuring tool. I am going to have the barrels reblued and I'll have my 'smith measure both for me and possibly open the chokes up a bit. It will be interesting to find out what the measurements are; I'll keep you posted. |

SP in a circle is the SAVAGE PROOF mark.
Don't know about the Y.

For all you 16ga SW fans . . . I once owned one of the very last ones made. I have the SN somewhere in my records, and a photo of it was used in Double Gun Journal (someone else's article). The gun did not have the raised "bosses" on the sides of the receivers, which all Foxes had. Instead, the receiver sides were flat, but the little spearpoint engraving--which on normal Foxes follows the outline of the boss--was there. Fox experts speculated that the receiver for my gun was probably made as an SP, which was the only flat-sided Fox. But as their operation closed down, they didn't have any SP orders, so they simply case colored it and engraved it to make it look like a standard SW. |
