My book [pg79] is showing that the proper date/model code for a Sweet Sixteen from 1967 is 7S

The little Madis book states the coding changed in 58'. The 58' guns and 68' guns both start with 8S but the 58's have a round knob and the 68's should have a square knob. IF your gun has a round grip, it's possible some 57' guns received the code change??

The plot continues to thicken.
You are thinking along the same train of thought as myself. My gun has a round knob and is Belgium made. It seemed strange that the main body of the serial number is correct for 57 and if the leading numbers for 58's and 68's starts with an 8S, is it possible as you say that the 57's/67's start with 7S?
Regards
John

VERY interesting (and fun). I'm betting it's a 57' BUT you may be forced to post over on gunshop.com BBS to get to the bottom of this.

According to Blue Book, the 1957 Ser nos started with an "S", not "7S."

662,
Most likely you have a horn butt plate. According to Blue Book, they were horn to '62, plastic from '64 on, with a transition period in between.

1957 Sweet 16s would be numbered S72301 - S99908 OR A1 - A10900.
The numeric/alpha prefix (8S, 9S, etc) began in '58.

I have my grandfathers browning 16 gauge auto-5. Looking up the seriel number R70845, it says it is made in 1956 and is not a sweet sixteen. What makes the gun a "sweet Sixteen". Also does anyone know where I would find a value for my gun (not looking to sell, just curious).

Beyond the fact that it would have the words "SWEET SIXTEEN" engraved in scroll on the upper left receiver, Sweet 16s had the butt stock hollowed out and 3 holes drilled in the barrel ring. There may have been other lightening cuts also. Sweets end up about 10 oz lighter than a standard 16 with the same barrel configuration.
It was FNs attempt to get them weighing less like a 12 and more like a 16, but they still come in around 6.75-7.0 lbs.
Hope this helps.
Pete

Sweet Sixteens also have the gold trigger--see offhand35's post above.
