Can any of the Fox aficionados give me a little education on the different barrel weights for Foxes. I occasionally read where a Fox has a number 3 or number 4 weight barrels. Which is lighter/heavier? Were the different weights available in all lenghts? etc...
Thanks - Hc |

weights go 1-heaviest
4 lightest
My 16 ga Sterlingworth has #3 weight 30inch tubes.
Markings are fairly lightly struck, and frequently not visible. I believe all four weights were available in all lengths. Jeff |

Thanks Jeff
I am looking at an out of state 16 ga Sterlingworth with #4 30" tubes. It should be a well balanced piece.

Right, Jeff. McIntosh's book has a weight chart for for barrel #'s in 26, 28 & 30".

Barrel weight markings were used to match certain barrels by weight before they were assemled into a completed set. After the set was assembled it was struck ( filed for contoured and polished). Although it stands to reason that starting with a lighter blank would produce a lighter finised barrel there may be no relationship between the starting weight and the finished weight depending on the amount of metal removed in the finishing process. |
