Do any of you know of any commerically loaded 16 gauge steel in #6 or 7 size shot? In some of the places we hunt snipe, non-toxic is required. The smallest size I can find is #4's. How much of a problem is it to hand load steel myself and can anyone suggest some load recipes?
I know, I know, there are other non toxic options available, but man they are expensive.
Well I suppose its like the old saying, "If you're going to play like a man, you've got to pay like a man."

i know this topic has been done to death on other threads, but my 2 cents go like this:
i quit loading steel and when the need arises i shoot bismuth and kent t/m factory loads.......i'm licking my chops waiting for t/m to become available to the handloader.
pm me with the hulls you are using and i will see if any of my data will work.
i'm sure 16gawaterfowler can chime in as well.
for my money steel and the 16ga just don't cut it. |

I must agree with 87016ga.---the steel loads are not the most efficient, not in the 12 ga. either. I saw some Federal "Premium" 16 ga. loads, box of 25 at Gander Mtn. in Indianapolis today; on sale for $12.99; they were #2's. Just could not bring myself to purchase---they were only 15/16 oz. and the ducks just deserve better. I use Bismuth 1 1/8 oz. #4's for ducks in my 16's.. They are costly but very effective. |

The smallest your going to find commercially available will be the Federal 15/16 oz #4 steel loads. They aren't bad for decoying ducks usually if there in close they will do the job. For something as small as snipe you could get away with these loads as well, they will do the job.
You want something really affective try loading up some #6 or 7 Hevi shot, Ballistic Products has some decent loads for use with the 16 ga Multi Metal wads, with #6 hevi they knock down big mallards out to 40 yards.
Another option would be to buy the Federal loads and some smaller steel shot, then just pry open the crimps, dump the factory shot, replace it with smaller shot and recrimp them. 410 grains of steel shot should be 15/16 of an ounce. |
