That's the way all of them were when I was a kid, and a fender was a fender.

Spent the opener at the river building a bath house for the women folks but came home this afternoon in hopes of slipping out for an afternoon hunt, only to be informed that the in-laws were coming up for a Labor Day feast, so I mowed the stinking yard and picked flowers for my mother in law, and suffered through grilled salmon, grilled okra, sweet corn and purple hulls out of the garden:) and coconut frosted chocolate cake.
Finally finding the house quiet about 5, I could look down the hill and see the doves still swarming on my little sunflower field, and me and the pup decided to get out of the old lady’s hair. Birds fled from every direction as we approached the field, and I passed up a few shots getting set up on our little shaded spot on the edge of with the sun at our backs. Sometimes after the birds have been shot at, when you get there late and they all fly off, they don’t come back, and since it was day 3 of the season, I didn’t know how educated they may be already, and it was several minutes after we settled in before I started seeing birds. So I’m happy to say that the 2018 bird season opened up with a good old fashioned right and left double ! And in less than an hour I’d killed ten birds with 12 shots, and I only missed one bird! Hoping to let them settle in happily for future pleasure, and knowing ten birds is a good mess for a evening grilling this week, Josie and I slipped out, smiling and shaking my head, as more birds poured in late, second-guessing emptying both tubes unfired. . What a great start to the season, and the pup, now pushing four, is in her prime. I am one lucky and thankful sucker. |

Hunted them Sept 1-3 in Ks. Use several guns, 410, 28, 20 and my 16 ga Metkel.
Was the poorest season in my memory of hunting them for about 40 years.
Did not shoot 15 in three days and I have good places to hunt. |

I had a fantastic dove hunt this morning. I can't believe I'm 54 and I've never dove hunted before. Now I see why people like it so much. I had to stop one bird shy of my 15 bird limit because I only brought a box of shells, thinking I wouldn't shoot that much. Happily, I was wrong
Here's my first ever brace of doves with my Husky mod. 100 16ga hammer gun:

Mark, that is fine shooting. I killed 11 with 11 shells. Of course, the other several dozen shots didn't kill anything. If I killed a limit of dove with less than a box, I would take out a TV ad proclaiming it. Gil |

Gentlemen,
Here in Pa we regard our opener as the weekend of October 15th, Grouse and Woodcock season, almost another month away. All this talk of hunting Grouse out west is always torture on us Pa Grouse hunters.
Have fun and keep the great pictures of those western Grouse coming.

Blue grouse hunting on this past Sunday morning......
The temp was 60f at 0800 at 7800' and my 11 year old girl (still hunting her heart out with two re-manufactured knees) was a little warm after climbing to altitude so we sat down under some ancient Doug Firs to water her and get her tongue back in her mouth.
I often leash her up while taking a break - didn't do it this time.
She trots off, starts checking the air and runs about 25 yards away - busting a brood of about 8 Blues while I'm sitting on my arse.
Off they go over the canyon, into the abyss.
My bad.
My "crappy" little CZ Sharptail did connect this past weekend, though.
Good to have it "back on".
Four months of Blues, Ruffs, Huns, Sharpies, and roosters. Maybe even Chukar.
Life is good/good luck to all................ |

Blue grouse and ruffs have been hit or miss here, so has my shooting. For the most part the shooting has gone better than the finding but one area has treated me rather kindly. It has been just what the Dr. ordered. There was even a golden trout blue grouse combo. I will try to remember to round up pictures when I have more time. Bird season is the ultimate therapy. |

If I could find an - what I consider - easy way to post pics, I'd love to.
But til that happens, what comes from me can/may be considered fake news, if one so wishes to consider it that.
Seems to be a popular thing nowadays........... |

I went out to a KDWP managed dove field in the afternoon on opening day(Sat) and there were so many hunters there i had to find a place to set and had one dove come in my area in a two hour time. My golden retriever and I were disgusted after hearing all the shooting at the other end of the field.
Went back today expecting to have some luck after the field had rested a few days but when we got there we found that the corn that surrounded the sunflower field was gone and the state signs were gone as well. There were few rows of corn still standing in the middle of the field so I set up there. After a couple hours of seeing only one dove at a distance my dog was bugging me to leave and I finally agreed and we went back to the van. hadn't driven a mile before the rain hit and we dealt with patches of rain all the way home.
Went by a bigger dove field and found it to be totally bare of any sunflowers or corn.
I am surprised that the state handled the fields this way and will be contacting KDWP about the situation. |

mtbirder,
Sounds like a beautiful outing, with your dog and CZ gun, how about some pictures next time? Things here in Pa are way to warm to even consider hunting.
Can't wait for the 15th of October! Like to see some nice pictures of your Blue Grouse,
been a long time sense the 70's when I hunted them.
