If you plan on reloading (a really good move), then a double of either SxS or O/U persuasion will help eliminate the loss of valuable and often scarce hulls. I like all configurations, but the SxS makes my smile the most and the old American ones seem to fit my character/ personality. They all go bang and drop birds though. |

This sounds like something my wife would ask and therefore I do not understand the question.

Need has nothing to do with it if you want it and afford it get it. Case closed. |

TS Elliott, I agree with you. Need has nothing to do with it. I want at least one 16ga gun from every manufacturer. There is a difference between need and want. We all need one 16ga gun.
I presently have 4. I hunt mainly with my JP Sauer, but all the others get shot too. |

Right now what makes sense to me (forever evolving) is to have a couple classic 16's choked just a little differently for the birds I hunt (pheasants & grouse/woodcock) and another I don't mind getting wet hunting ducks (A5), and one more that can take a bit more regular use shooting clays. My answer is 4.

All seriousness aside, this is about where I'm at too, although I may substitute a 12 for a 16 in the waterfowl dept. |

Two, because you never know what is going to happen to one. One crash can break a stock, or a firing pin might break, or whatever. Beyond the required pair, well the rest are just there to keep them company. It would be a shame to let one of them get lonely in the safe. Of course as a responsibility, however many 16's there are, they all need to be "exercised" periodically so they don't die of boredom.

What he said. I have gradually moved from a Stevens SXS to add an Ithaca 37, a Marlin 90 and a Remington 11 Sportsman. I find I shoot the Stevens the best, the Remington second and don't spend enough time with the others to get good with them. The Stevens has trigger problems but in the next year I will probably have it cleaned up and consider passing the Marlin and Ithaca on to someone who will pay them more attention.
By the way WyoChukar - Sviler's or El Toro? |

You need at least, on O/U, One Pump, One Semi-Auto, One SxS, one Single Shot, One Bolt and One lever (was there ever a bolt or lever made in 16?). But then you need a back up for each and maybe a back up for the back-up.

I'm with VictoryXC--I've got three young kids and I have to look out for them. They'll each "need" to be able to choose from a few shotguns to get that perfect fit, so...whenever I see a nice 16 I don't need, I remember that it's not about me, it's about the kids, and I need to think of their needs. ;-)

The only problem is........when you lock them away in the cabinet/safe.........
THEY MULTIPLY! I started with one. Then an Ithaca NID moved in. I open the door and there is a Fox Sterlingworth! I cringe to even shut the door now, because when I open it again, who knows WHAT will be in there then. |

It's OK to buy guns intended for the kids (or wifey !) . However , that plan doesn't always work out , so it pays to get ones YOU are ok with just in case !! ( my Red Label has a short stock set up for wifey , who hasn't shot it ten shots since the gun was set-up ! I just have to struggle with it when I need it for something !) My kid on the other hand , has had no problem whatsoever , sorting and stacking my collection for HIS kids ! Good luck getting the LT's or LW's back ! ( to the OP , 7 or 8 ) |

Need really has nothing to do with it. But I have only two, a Heritage Citori and a new A5 SW16
I shoot five gauges, so not likely to own more that 2-3 per gauge. |
