OK Guys, most probably a dumb question, but, if you don't ask, you won't learn.
I'm new to loading 16GA. What is all of this talk about Cheddite hulls? What are they? Special? Just a brand name? A type of contruction? What? Are they good hulls? Can they be reloaded a number of times, like Win AAs? Or just a few like many of the cheaper field loads?
Thanks.

I'm also fairly new to reloading. The gentleman who taught me uses them exclusively and reloads them 6 to 8 times each. They are easy to acquire, good quality for the price, and have allot of recipes available, including non-tox.
The best lesson I learned (for which ever hull you use) was to search out components readily available, find a couple of recipes (one hunt, one range, one non-tox) and stick to them.
My range load - 2 3/4" 16ga. Chedite hull, chedite 209 primer, 18gr Unique, SG16 wad, 1oz. #71/2, cheerio and fold crimp. Nice pattern. May go to 7/8 or 3/4 oz. lead, #71/2
Upland load - 2 3/4" 16ga. Chedite hull, chedite 209 primer, 20gr Unique, SG16 wad, 1oz. lead, #71/2, and fold crimp. Nice pattern, and can add a spreader disc.
I have two Bismuth loads one with 2 3/4" 16ga. Winchester CF hulls, ched 209, 20gr Unique, Rem SP16 wad and 1oz. bismuth. (I have five hundred).
And when they run out I will use -2 3/4"16ga. chedite hull, ched 209, 24gr. SR7625, TC16 wad, 1 oz. bismuth fold or roll crimp.
I've went through two kinds of hulls, four different wads and four different powders (and about 30 pattern sheets) to get to this point. If I had not stumbled upon the Win CF hulls (although glad I did), I'd have one type of hull, one primer, two wads and two powders.
Not sure if that helped any.
Don. |
