Finaly, I did the paper work on my Model 90 and got to inspect it.
I found that the serial #'s on the reciever don't match the barrel or forearm. That means the butt doesn't match either as it obviously is matched to the forearm.
Reciever is J397
Barrel and wood are marked X397
I actualy thought that was what was in the photo but it was hard to see I assumed they matched.
What are the chances of a previous owner finding two guns that are both 397?!??! That is a serious coincidense!
Is this nothing more then dumb luck or did the gun leave the factory like this?
I thought maybe this gun was a special order or some kind of special model. Maybe the extra fancy wood, recoil pad, and polychoke rib came from the factory?
Either way, gun is in great shape. The bore and chamber sparkle ! Wood has only one tiny mark on it. Metal is great.
Maybe a gunsmith hot blued the entire J397 gun which turned the reciever plum and caused the solder to melt on the barrel and he had to replace the customers gun with the X397 parts. Seems plausible to me.

Check this out!
I found this on shotgun world. A guy owns serial J340 and his is also marked X340 on the rest of the gun. So I guess this is normal?
Interesting his gun also has the great wood, same recoil pad, no rib though.

I presume that is normal as my 90 is the same way except it is "G" and "X". |

Marlin started using letter prefixes to indicate the year made on all Model 90's afterWWII. A few made in 1940 and 1941 also had a letter prefix but they are not common.
None of my post-WWII model 90's have the letter prefix stamped anywhere but on the frame. A couple of mine have an X stamped AFTER the number on the extractor slide bar and inside the forearm. Some of my other Model 90's don't have the X before or after the the number. As long as all the digits match, is highly probable that it was assembled at the factory. |

My model A344 is marked the same on all parts, even stamped onto the end of the buttstock. |
