There was a recent question on the low pressure group asking if the DR16 wad was biodegradable. No definitive answer.

I collected a few that I shot a month or so ago and put them on the floor of my pick-up. I've noted their appearance occasionally. So far, I don't see ant sign of disintegration.

As I recall they are intended to be biodegradable in the future, but I don't think they are yet. At least not when they were first available.

Perhaps Nick will see this post and reply. He'd probably know.

Hey. Don't laugh. I went hunting the other day before we got snow here - Tuesday - and took two shots at a squirrel on a steep hillside above me. I'll admit I missed with both. I suppose I should have worked my way closer than the 60 yards it turned out to be, but I saw my chance was closing (the squirrel was exposed, antsy and heading for cover) and stalking up a 45 degree hill covered in twigs and dead leaves don't work well for me anymore.

Anyway, as I was checking where the squirrel was to make sure I had missed it and didn't leave a wounded animal behind, I found both the wads. I know they were mine because I was a mile off the road and they were 16 ga wads that still smelled of powder. At least I shot straight - they were right in line. Interestingly, the wad from the RST in my right barrel had 8 pellets stuck in the wad plastic. The blue Remmie wad from my left barrel had none.

Which leads me to wonder: how many pellets get stuck in wad plastic and never make it to the target? Kinda like change slipping between the sofa cushions....

I guess that I can quit watching the fired DR16s on the floor of the pickup-appears that they won't be dissolving.

I'm no expert, but I don't think even a biodegradable wad would disintegrate just laying on the dry floor of your pick em up.

To call the floor of this F350 dry may apply in the summer, but not the other 9 months of the year Smile

I just got an email from Kevin at Downrange Mfg. stating that they currently have no plans to produce an OXO-BIO version of the DR16 wad.

Here is a basic understanding of the benefits and penalties of non biodegradable and biodegradable wads. Nothing in the world disappears from the environment. When the plastic wad, produced as a by-product of refining crude oil, bio-degrades in an unspoiled environment, the material in the wad filters down through the surface and through assimilation, into the ground water aquifers which we all drink from. On the other hand, leaving the non biodegradable wads on the surface, they become tilth for aerating the soil in future time which assists in retaining melt water and preventing mud slides, erosion and other natural disasters caused by the unimpeded flow of water over the land surface.

Just a thought. JF
