no necesarily a 16 ga question but, what would be a very reliable semi auto to buy? any make or model or ga. preferably not overly expensive, but will consider all options. thanks in advance for your input

Rem 1100, years of proven service, easy to repair if necessary, lots of stocks and barrels available

have to agree with skeettx on that...or a decent A5...you just can't kill these guns...in 12 , 16 , or 20.

I think the best semi-auto ever made was a Win SuperX Model 1, but that was only made in standard 12 ga. For 16 ga, if you don't mind all the clanging around, a long-recoil such as an A5 or Rem 48, is you want smooth, then it's a Rem 1100.

I've had my 12 ga 1100 chambered in 2.75 for 35 years ... absolutely no issues other that the older I got the more of a burden it was to carry the 8+ lbs around all day. That was the major reason I bought the 16ga Citori.

My brother-in-law bought an 1100 12 ga mag gun that worked fine with 3 inch shells but shooting 2.75 inch shells was a problem. The mag guns have one gas port to operate the bolt and the 2.75 guns have two smaller ones. This was many years ago, but I seem to remember the fix was to enlarge the one port slightly so there was enough gas pressure from a 2.75 inch to operate the bolt.

Hard to go wrong with an 1100. My father has had a plain barrel one since the 1970s that he and I have used to take countless ducks, geese, and pheasants in nasty conditions without a single issue. In the recoil operated dept an A5 or 11-48 will do just about anything I need it to and seem to also last forever if maintained. I know people that love the Benelli's but I just couldn't bring myself to spend that kind of money on a gun that looks like that and is essentially recoil operated. I have heard good things about some of the Beretta's though, like the 390. If they made them in 16ga I'd buy one in a heartbeat. Besides the Rem 58 and 1100 I can't even think of any other gas operated 16 gauge guns. Seems like one of these companies would have picked up on that by now...

Get a nice old Sweet 16. They are classic and just keep on running.

Remington model 11s are a bargain alternative to the A5. If you're recoil sensitive you can't beat a Winchester model 50 although they are heavier than most and were never made in 16 gauge (sad but true). I have a Beretta ES100 (original Benelli inertia action) which is a very good, reliable, lightweight gun, but it has no "soul."

A-5 or Mod11. If they made a 16ga Montefeltro I would buy it in a hearbeat.

Here's a nice sportsman that would suite you nice, and not break the bank.
