I'll venture a guess saying they never stopped producing some every year or so...but that is pure guess.

The Mossbergs aren't beauty queens, and you guys would know-most wives aren't, either.

Nothing in the world wrong with how they work (Mossbergs, not wives, but, they usually work OK as well).

I'd buy an older 500 in 16, if I could find one. I'd spend the difference between that and a model 12 on a bunch of ammunition, and a 'coupla short hunting trips, with really good lunches. And I'd shoot just as many birds as anyone else. With the leftover money, I'd pay the dogs yearly vet bill. Frontline, heartworm medicine, exam, the whole shebang. Probably be a 'coupla bucks left over for a six pack, or three, as well.

Mossberg has made more money on 500s than any other company in the world has on pump guns. Decades before there was an 870 Express, there was a New Haven 600AT. They can afford to laugh at you. Sorry, but it is true.
Best,
Ted

Yeah, they're ugly. yeah they look and feel "cheap" but the Model 500's will surprise you. I bought two Model 500 12 gauges in 1984 for law enforcement firearms training. Approximately 2400 rounds of 12 gauge slug and buckshot duty ammo has went through both guns every year since then, plus 2500-3000 rounds of target rounds during the introduction course on the skeet field.

Total repair to both guns:

One (1) each shell lifter spring.
One (1) each trigger return spring.
One magazine latch spring
One safety spring

Total costs about $50.

When I retired in 2004, I dontated both guns to a regional academy. They teach four classes a year, so the amount of rounds has been doubled since then and both guns are still working fine.

A hunting acquaintance has a Mosberg 500 in 16 gauge with vent-rib and C-lect choke (the deluxe model with checkering). When I asked him how much he would sell me that gun for, his reply was that he wouldn't sell it to me but he would trade it for my youngest dog. Since he knew I'd never get rid of that dog, he was telling me that he'll never get rid of his Mossberg. I've watched him run 200 straight at skeet with that gun, so I dropped the discussion.

If I could find a 16 gauge Model 500, I'd buy it AND USE IT!

This thread reminds me of the story about the married couple who were having a short term financial squeeze. So the old man gave up buying beer so the wife could save money for bills.

About two weeks went by. That evening the old man comes home to find his wife had bought about 90 bucks worth of cosmetics and beauty aids. When he hits the ceiling, the old girl tells him those beauty aids are for making her more attractive to him so they could keep on enjoying each other. To this he says" So what do you think all the beer was for."

Hey Ted, you ain't been married nearly long enough to start drinking a lot of beer at home yet, but you are right about the Mossy. They do the job very well, but they are plain to begin with and usually end up butt ugly for sure. Wink Laughing

My wife is waiting at the door for me with a beer when I get home from work. 105 pounds of pure, beautiful, sweet, native, Colombian woman. Haven't seen anything in the states to compare.

My Mossberg's have more cosmetics than she does, and thats the way I like it.

Model 12 guys are trying to make up for something, I think.
Best,
Ted

Good on you Ted! I was just teasing. I'll bet the best part is the somewhat different attitude she has towards life.
