TJC:

No screw in chokes. Just opened up to SKT/LM. It's already been shipped to Briley. Maybe I'm getting lazy, but I hate cleaning screw-ins! I wish my 12g sporting clays gun had fixed IC/IC chokes!

No. but they will shrink your wallet. Laughing I'd still go with the tubes. It's a better option.

Quite frankly I think Paul has made a wise decision.

I have shot Blue, Columbia Sharptail and Sage Grouse in his home state. Sharptail, Prairie Chicken and Pheasant in Nebraska and Quail, Prairie Chicken and Pheasant in Kansas all with my favorite Fox choked Skeet 1 and Skeet 2/Lt Mod and have seldom wanted or needed more choke. On really nasty days when I know the birds will be flushing wild I break out one of the long barrel thight choked guns but that is seldom.

Paul, You've got it right, forget the screw-ins. Wink You have one hell of a gun there. My 1620 is the favorite here.......love my Citoris, but nothing else comes close. My next gun will most likely be another Merkel, $ allowing. Smile

Okay guys, I know nothing about Merkels, except they have lazer sights.
But, I did go looking at some on the net. Couldn't find any with the sights. I did notice that some of the 1620's look like they have a pin through the wood, behind the receiver. And some don't. Are the newer guns now made with the wood reinforced? Not being a smart guy, asking a serious question.
Anyone have an answer. Thanks, Dave

And since Dave started this Embarassed -what is the difference in $ and weight between a 1620 and a 16g. 47E? Are 1620s special order? (TJC's been waiting for his) Is the 1622 a 1620 with sideplates? And what is a 2016?? Thanks also.

and BTW: I agree with CP, TB, and BS (funny how those handles turned out Very Happy Sounds like something medical I DON'T want) about the chokes and screw-ins but we all have different styles of hunting.

If I was to buy a Merkel, my first impression would be a very empty feeling in my stomach. I'd have to give up eating for at least a month to afford one. Wink Laughing

Well, since we are helping spend the guy's money, I still advocate the screw-in chokes--since we're helping to spend his money. Rolling Eyes

Rev, since I sold my 28 gauge Parker Repro. The Merkel 280, 28 gauge, with 28" barrels, straight stock, and two triggers. Is looking like my next 28 gauge gun. It's hard to find a 28 gauge SxS, with 28" barrels. I have no use for the 26" barrels. Now, the hunt for a deal of a lifetime is on. Laughing

Paul,
Nothing wrong with the Skt1 and Skt2 idea. In fact, it is exactly what is in my Merkel 47E 16 ga. I just want the option of going both barrels wide open over the dogs and then back to both barrels tighter choked if I need to.

There is almost 6 oz's difference, supposedly, between the 47E and the 1620.

The reason I'm waiting on mine is: I wanted a pistol grip with 2 triggers. Most of the guns shipped here with pistol grips have single select trigger. I don't like the straight stock and they have 2 triggers. Sooooo, to get the gun I wanted and get it at a very reasonable price, I ordered it. It is expected to take up to 6 months to get here from Germany from the time of order. I wasn't in a hurry so I went with the order.

I think the next one will be a Merk in .410. Just something about that little gun that I think I could like. Especially shooting over the well disciplined, pheasant seeking, bird finding, beautiful Drahthaars known as The Girls. Very Happy
Shots are in close and tight so the little gun would work.

I've handled both 1620 and 47E Merkels since last fall. I like the 47E better. It's only slightly heavier but a darn sight sweeter swinging--at least the one I handled. However, it also seemed to have more drop at heel and did not line up as nice as my Beretta 409. So I think my B gun is gonna do the job for me. It also splits the weight issue right down the middle at 6 lbs, 7 ounces. I'm happy. And ahead by a wad or three of moola.

Here's the Merkel importer (GSI) website:
http://www.gunshop.com/merkel_47e.htm
It lists the 47E as both 12 and 16 at 6 1/2 #, the 1620 at 6#.
Couldn't find a price list.

That's because they want to sell you one, not give you heart failure from sticker shock. Razz
