We are in the process of desinging and getting ready to build a new home. I have been thinking of having a concrete vault built in the basement ( a small room actually) and putting a safe door on it.
1. Anybody know who would sell such a door?
2. Any other thoughts on my idea?
Thanks

At one time I considered doing building a vault, but bought a save instead. At the time many of the safe builders sold doors for just that purpose. I wish now that I had gone through with the idea.
good luck, I hope you can find the perfect door. |

my 1st house had jog where the entrance was upstairs . When I finished the basement wall , I extended it 18'' or so and put the paneling on with velcro . INVISIBLE ! If you use a moisture collector , make sure you empty it routinely . Mine overspilled the pan and caused problems for a while . |

Check on Ebay. There were several places that sold framed doors that look just like gun safes, but larger so you could walk thru. I considered it once as well, but opted for better insurance, and storing the most special guns in a safe.

A barrelmaker/gunsmith friend of mine had a walkin gun safe in which he stored the fifty-sixty guns entrusted to him. The safe was built at the time the building was. It was concrete block with re-bar laid horizontally between rows of block as they were bing laid, then put vertically in the "tubes" created by the stacked block, then cement was poured to fill the tubes. The wall portion of the safe was virtually a re-bar cage and 8" solid cement. The door was about 7' by 4'. Like any safe, it could have been burglarized, but it would have required a very knowledgeable person or one with about a week of uninterupted efforts. |

Whatever you do, just be sure to provide redundant protections against moisture and, in a basement, flooding. Prefereably, solutions that do not involve needing electricity.
Here in Maine, wood-pellet stoves are a popular heating method and often the cheapest BTUs available. But, since the stoves require an electrically-powered blower to run properly, when the power goes out the heat does, too. That's bad enough, but moisture/flooding and guns definitely don't mix.... |

A well known gun seller I know has a walk in vault. Very nice if you can make it work. |

I bought a scratch & dent Browning/Pro Steel vault door from a local gun shop for $1250. I coated it with indoor house paint to match the wall color and installed some decals for camouflage. Probably one of the best investments I ever made.
