Join this group about 5 years back when I got this French "Guild" Gun and have been reading and learning a lot since joining. Finally took a few pics of this gun and wanted to show her off. She certainly has improved my trap shooting. She has a story too. brought back from France by an Army Doc then stuck in the back of a closet in 1950 by his niece and forgotten until about 5 years back when the niece was moving and found her still in the closet. I paid the niece a fair price, cleaned the gun and have been shooting her regularly since.

Thanks Mike,

This 16 is also 65 chambers and she really likes RST 2 1/2" #8's.

Good for you Top!

When I read posts like this, I stop and wonder how many old shotguns are standing in the closet, attic, safe, etc. and forgotten?

Lon

Thanks morngstar, the case color is great for a plain Jane "Guild" gun and the wood is one of the main reasons I bought the gun, other being she fit me like she was made for me. Did you notice the right hand offset in the second pic?

Here are a couple more pics of the wood and one of the barrel markings.

Sure would like to narrow down about when this gun was made.

Two Pipes, sorry, promised the gun she would never be put in another closet.

I don't know a thing about French SXS scatter guns. From what little I do know, I encourage you to dig a little deeper. That quality of wood and broad beavertail looking forearm has high end Skeet/Trap Grade written all over it. If you don't get answers here try Shotgun World and keep us posted.

Thanks again morngstar. Hopefully someone here will have some ideas/info on this gun but if not I'll try Shotgun World. That wide flat beavertail wraps up almost over the barrels and is certainly great for trap shooting. Also the straight grip has a 4 1/16" circumference and seems delicate but is very strong.

Savage16, thanks and I have a dumb question, what is DDG?

Thanks, that link to French proofs narrowed it down to between 1923 and when the gun arrive in the States in 1946. Kinda makes me suspect pre-WWII. The Cross branches under the crown with the word STETIENNE and the crown over PT both are on the bottom of the barrels and the crown over PT is on the watertable of the receiver. I suspect the AM after the serial number is the maker of the gun. I know the M&P in an oval under the barrel is the maker of the barrels and was located near St. Etienne, FR. Also know the chambers are a measured 2 1/2", the barrels are 26 7/8", the weight is 6.1lbs and the chokes are imp mod and full. The niece told me the white line pad was on the gun when the doc dropped it off in 1950.

Fun reading here Smile

http://www.doublegunshop.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=328205#Post328205

If, and I say IF the Doc had the gun restocked, the smith may have placed his name and date under the recoil pad.
I have an old gun labeled this way

I do not know of any French gun that was not checkered or carved.

Mike

Mike,

That was fun reading, think I'll leave the white line alone for now.

I'll also check under the pad. I always wondered why this gun wasn't checkered. Figured maybe the builder didn't want to hide that fine looking wood. Will let you know what I find.

Mike, I pulled the recoil pad off and nothing there but 2 screw holes and really clean bare wood. The wood on the butt looks as good as the rest of the stock but no date and/or signature.
