I need some help waxing up my new walnut stocked shotgun. Do I wax the checkered areas, too? How many coats? Any help you can give is appreciated. I have Johnson Paste Wax and Birchwood Gun Stock Wax. Which do I use? What say you? Thanks... |

Hi Gary:
The only wax I have used on my long guns is Renassance Wax which is available locally at Woodworkers Warehouse. Also available on line. I have applied it sparingly to an area say one side of the butt stock and then buff to a hard finish. I apply it to the entire gun including the metal and the checkering. It does not seem to build up in the checkering. This wax is not cheap but is a quality product that goes a long way. Get the smallest container you can. There are some who claim that it leaves the gun open to showing fingermarks. I believe this is due to an over application of wax and I have not had this problem. This wax was developed in England for use by museums (according to their literature) on historic furniture .

I have also used Howard's Feed and Wax...I get it at Home Depot or Lowes and it also does not tend to build up. |

When Fine Woodworking did an article on waxes several years ago they concluded that "wax is wax" with no significant differences in brands.
I use whatever is handy. Sometimes the checkering gets a bit of buildup but it cleans up quite nicely with an old toothbrush. |
