Mike, thank you so much for your replies. Out of curiosity, why does this receiver not have the serial stamped on the bottom near the loading gate and only on the side? All the others I have looked at online have the serial in the bottom location on the receiver where mine is blank. I also seem to have a rougher material on the top of my receiver whereas all the others seem to be smooth in appearance.

I'm reading that link right now. Thank you for all your help.

Pawn1st,

My opinion is that you have a very early 16 Ga receiver that someone has added a later generation 16ga barrel to, to "build" a working gun. The receiver has too many screws for a 1958 model. The punch hole on the left side is also of the early "enlarged" variety. The trigger blade shape looks like an early model as well.

Shoot it. I bet it will hunt just fine.

Scott

Stop the presses! This is an "American Browning" made by Remington during WWII. it is essentially a Model 11 with a magazine cut-off and Browning markings.

He he he
What fun, so now we have a 1920-30, a WW II and a 1958
Who is next Smile
what fun
Mike

hint: look at the safety
1952 was the first year that FN made Brownings with the cross bolt safety as standard.

The Remington made Brownings had the serial number on the side. 16's had an "A" prefix, 12's a "B" and 20's a"C". The lock screws, shape and frosted top of the receiver are pure Remington. Most FN parts will not fit.

Haha guys, I'm beyond lost on this now Laughing I'm just trying to find out a good price for it to sell it out of my shop but I also love learning about older guns. I'll stick it in my back room for now and keep researching it further.

Yes! That looks just like what I have. Same serial location and same rougher looking top of the receiver. Now that I know what I'm looking at, I can dive further into researching this shotgun. Thank you so much Very Happy

Thanks, Mike.

It's a 1931 Grade II in 16 gauge, naturally. Browning quit offering the Grade II in 1935 when they made a simplified version of this pattern standard on the Grade I.

I thought posting pictures would be a better alternative for bumping this valuable resource to the top than posting TTT or similar.

I can't seem to find a date that matches the serial number on my Sweet Sixteen. The serial number is S 94300.
I believe the 94300 puts it at 1958. From what I've read, the 'S' means Sweet Sixteen but doesn't correlate to the 1958 lettering system. Am I making this too difficult? Is it a 1958.

I'm pretty sure that it's 1957

It may have been purchased in 1958, but you've got a late 1957 Sweet Sixteen. In 1958 the started putting a single digit date prefix, so there'd be an 8 in front of the S for that year.
