My current 16 has open chokes, so I reserve it for quail and jump shooting ducks off our creek. Since quail hunting accounts for about 75% of my time afield, the 16 sees a lot of use. |

Upland birds was what I checked, but Upland birds, small game, and predator & depredatory bird control would be the proper summary in my case. |

I use mine for anything that moves fast and requires instinctive pointing. For everything else I choose among the choices based on weather, quarry, terrain, and how far I have to tote. I leave the 12's at home most all the time and stick with the subgauges. I find that I shoot a 28 gauge about half the time because I can't seem to grow out of listening to beagles chase bunnies.

I shoot 16's and 12's only. 12's for waterfowl and higher volume clays shooting, but my 16's see plenty of clay practice.
Pheasants are an even draw as I use a 12 in 90% of the non-tox situations. Locally I do favor the 16 gauge, but I also have a custom 12 set up for pheasants, and that gun also is enjoyed.
Grouse/woodcock: all 16 gauge. |

I use my 16's for upland birds, crows, doves, and pasture trap. Also feral cats, but somehow that was overlooked as a choice. |

I voted "all of the above" before squirrels , rabbits and turkeys were there , but go ahead and apply my vote to the squirrels and rabbits column . Turkeys , not so much , never have enjoyed the taste of wild turkeys .

I use too limit my hunting to only what I would eat too. But some time ago came around to the idea of feeding my dogs anything that I did not want. I don't consider that a waste and it cuts down some on the pet food bill. |

My reply will be different than most, but mine 16 Ga is mostly for home protection, novelty (love old and old style guns) and shooting unwanted small animals like rabided skunks, possums, etc. as well as poisonous snakes. Also have used it to scare off some wild dogs that were threats to my cats (a couple of blasts in the air).
Also just like to blast off a few now and then. I would love to shoot clays targets, but could never afford the fancy machine as I usually shoot alone, lol.

The first year I had my Model 37 Ithaca 16 gauge ended up using it for all my bird hunting. My Mdl 1100 12 3" Mag had to have some serious repairs, so it was out for waterfowl. I used the 16 for lesser Canadians and for jump shooting mallards along the Powder river. Mostly used for dove and chukars along the Snake river. I never felt handicapped. This was in 1973. There was a better selection of ammo in those days. For dove and chukars used mostly 6 and 7 1/2 shot, 5 and 6 for ducks and 4 shot for geese. I still have some #4 shot for geese left over .It was full choked and later on I had it opened up to modified. Now its pretty much relegated to my only bird hunting: Blue and Ruffed grouse. |
