Does anyone know of plastic ammo boxes that specifically match 16 gauge size? I could by 12 gauge boxes, but I'm being stubborn |

If you are talking the boxes that hold 25 shells, I don't, but wish somebody did make them. |

I think I found the last two 16 gauge shotshell boxes, but they were made for 16/20 gauge use. They are called Universal Shell Boxes. No manufacturer's name on the plastic two piece box.
Being stubborn is one thing, looking for something that probably will never exist unless you start making them, is nonsensical. You might see if 20 gauge boxes will work for you. The difference in diameter of the two gauges is pretty small. |

Stubborn can be a good thing. Bonus points if you can find them made from purple plastic. Honorable mention for hunter orange.
Good luck... |

Someone is making orange plastic boxes now--I have 2. They are for 12 ga, but hold 30 16 ga.
I got mine at a Ruffed Grouse Society banquet and have also seen them for sale in PF magazine. |

OK - lets get a little creative here. You can't find 16 gauge boxes so why not take what you can get, modify them a little bit and you have your own creation. It's kinda like reloading shells with a particular recipe that suits your needs.
1. Get yourself a couple of the 12 gauge shell boxes made by MTM company.
2. Take out your handy dandy shell cutter. You know - the one you use to cut
shells to salvage components. Or a box cutter. Find some 12 gauge hulls you
already have in a box in the corner or some that are bad reloads.
3. Cut the crimp end off, salvage your stuff if they are bad reloads and then cut the
hull away from the base.
4. Making two cuts lengthwise, remove a portion of the hull enough so that when
the trimmed hull is in the 12 gauge slot (and trimmed for depth) the 16 gauge
shell will fit snuggly in the slots. How much you remove from the hull with the
two lengthwise cuts is up to you.You want a snug fit but a complete 12 gauge
hull won't let a 16 drop into the slot. Superglue the sliced hulls into place in the
25 slots.
You'll find that now the 16 gauge hulls drop into the 12 gauge box and fit snuggly without rattling around when you move the box. Problem solved until you find the 16 gauge boxes that don't exist. |

I had a very good laugh at the replies. Thank you... it made my day.
BTW... I did find empty paper boxes at BPI that will work. I'll just have to paint them purple. |

You might check with these folks:
http://mrlidoutdoors.com/products.html
manufacturer's website is www.sussexim.com
I don't see anything listed specifically for the 16 gauge, but when I spoke with the sales rep at last year's Pheasant Fest, I thought said they would be making gauge specific boxes.
I have no connection or experience with them, just passing on a possibility.
Best,

A substitute shell box that I have found that is the perfect size for 16 ga shells are cut-down 1/2 gallon milk cartons as pictured below. they hold 25 16 ga shells in a layer. If the half gallon carton is left full sized it holds 3 layers, total 75 shells.
OOOPS
The photos got deleted off the photobucket page which caused them to delete from here. I'm on my way over to the doctor, so it will be a few days until I get access to a computer to repost them. Something to look forward to!! |

Thanks... I got out a carton and cut it down. It was a bit wobbly, so I cut the next one to have side ears and a closing flap. I know BPI has them on sale for $0.38 each in 10 packs, but these work great and only take a few minutes to make. Great idea, and the dimensions are pretty close to perfect. |

Here are the photographs that didn't make it the first try. They are from a 1/2 gallon size of Half/Half. each layer is 25 shells. A full size carton hold three layers (75 shells). |

+ the carton has plenty of purple on it, so it saves the step of paint and labeling 16ga for easy recognition on the ammo shelf, beee-you-tyful, problem solved.... |

Thanks for the post on making FREE 16 gauge boxes. I made one in about 15 minutes from a Canadian 2 litre milk container. WORKS GREAT!
Criss-cross some heavy elastic band over the box to make it about as secure as you are likely to need.
BTW: I posted a link to this thread for my Pards on cascity.com |
