Used my 16 ga #8 Herters shells for the first time yesterday. Shot a small club 50 target Sporting clay course. First round I shot my 12 ga Semi-auto (Extrema2), there were not a lot of people there so another guy an I decided to shoot another round. This time I shot my 1930 something 2 9/16 converted to 2 3/4 inch standard A5. It would not cycle consistently on heavy setting, but on the light setting cycled them fine and recoil was mild. A lot of older gentlemen at this event and I got a lot of questions /comments about that old gun, poly choke and all.
Shot a 38/50 with the 12 ga and a 45/50 with the A5, of course second time on the course I had time to figure out some of my earlier mistakes. Was a fun informal event, met several new people. Nice way to spend a Sunday morning.
I have 3 boxes of #6 Nice shot 1 1/8oz already loaded for early teal and wood duck season. September is only FOUR months away!!! |

I bought several flats of Herters and shot them at the Southern SXS and they performed well. Seem to be one of the best buys out there when you can find them. |

Just bought two boxes at Cabelas yesterday. That was all they had in #8 shot. Price $7.99, which I thought pretty good these days. |

A little off topic, at Meijer's (grocery/mega store) over the weekend, spotted a few boxes of 16ga Winchester 6 & 8's on the shelf for $7.99.
further off topic, the rifle and pistol ammo shelves at the same store were a slightly more populated than I've seen in quite awhile. |

Or you could get them to ship to the store and not have to worry about shipping charges. That assumes their store is close enough to your home/travels that the cost of gas isn't more than the shipping.
Slightly OT, the local-to-me store had all their primers marked down, roughly 15 percent (e.g. a deck of 100 they had been selling for $4.99 was now $4.24). They had a good supply of most types (pistol, rifle, shotshell) though not all manufacturers. Still, they only had about 10 ea. 1# cans of 4350 and a lonely pound of 50BMG powder. While it ain't great, it is better than it was. |

These Herter's shells are the only thing that keeps me using my 16's for clays, especially since it's hard to reload them for much less than $5-6/box anyway (as long as you don't factor in your time). |

I have loaded six boxes of these hulls. The first loading went reasonably well. Some crimps were ugly. They shot just fine.
The second loading of those hulls saw 2-3 hulls per box that had serious splits in the crimp.
Looks to me like these hulls are going to be good for less than five reloadings, at best. |

Thats typical for most cheditte hulls . I have been getting anywhere from 2 to 5 reloads from the Herters ,not many 5s . They load very good for me with great looking crimps . |

I'd say these Herters 16 gauge are a best buy at Cabelas. The load is perfect for both clays and birds at 1165 FPS. I just ordered another case from Cabela's we site. |

I picked up a case when I was at Cabelas last week. Shot a couple boxes at skeet the past weekend. Compared the hulls to a friends BPI Multi Hulls and could not tell any difference other than the color. The headstamp and basewad even looked identical. They don't kick as much as the Remmy GL's. Shot a box of them right after shooting a box of Herters to compare.
So far I'm happy! |
