Hi all, I reloaded some new Cheddite hulls and they crimped just fine, but today the crimps unfolded and pooched out. Here's the recipe:

1 1/16oz, Z-16 wad, 22grs PB, Cheddite hull

I understand that this can be common, but was wondering if there is a way or method to prevent this. Or just re-crimp them later or before using them?

Thanks so much!

Greg

Thanks Mike, looks like it will be 1oz.

Take Care!

You can crunch the wad with your fingers to lessen the spring memory of the wad's legs, before you load it. I have loaded a lot of Z-16 and in new cases the new slick interior of the plastic tube lets the wad slip back some.

I would never add cherios to a load that might be used for dove hunting ,That would be baiting.

From your post, I'm assuming you are using brand new virgin hulls. Forming the necessary creases in a brand new plastic hull mouth to get well formed crimp folds is tough to do on the average reloading press in my experience. I've never been able to get satisfactory crimps w/ virgin hulls w/o first forming the creases by hand. Even then, I can't get the crimp folds to form up very firmly or neatly. I usually end up ruining too many hulls to make it practical.

Once fired factory hulls are far easier to deal with in my experience. Ammo factories have specialized equipment designed to form up the necessary creases and folds in virgin hull mouths. The average reloader doesn't have access to this specialized equipment. Factory formed crimp folds slide right into the average pie sectioned 6 or 8 point crimp starter, and the existing neatly formed creases allow the plastic hull mouth to crimp down nice and firm. The folds will stay put if the shot/wad/powder column is the proper height and isn't excessively pushing on the inside of the folds.

I suspect that is why it's called RELOADING instead of LOADING. Just saying.

I had the same problem and solved it by adjusting the final crimp to have slightly more dish inward. I don't do anything special on new red cheddites and they load great for me. I've loaded more than 15 flats and it's working fine

I use Honey Nut Cheerios , I keep hoping for some sweet , nutty flavor in my birds.

I sent the OP here for good suggestions because of the nonsense being suggested on SGW.

Doesn't look like there is much of a difference.

Sorry gjw!

Not sure if the "nonsense" being referred to was my post or not, but I just followed the MEC 9000 instructions for station 4 crimp starter and station 5 crimp adjustment guide and lowered the crimp punch so the final crimp is like that shown in the pictures, but not so deep that there is a center opening.

When I first started loading the new red Cheddites, I just didn't have it quite low enough and a few of the hulls would open a bit. I am using 7/8 oz, DR-16, 17.5gr PB and Win209. Maybe my solution is irrelevant to OP issue, but I thought I would offer it. If you have too much stack height to fit in the hull, I guess that's a whole different issue.

I do eat cereal most every morning, but have never needed it in my reloading room. Very Happy

I have never really had a problem with my new hulls opening back up , but the stack height is good on my loads . The only thing I could suggest is to try and get a little more roll over on the crimp to lock it in . Or maybe try to re- crimp to help develop a little more crimp memory .

skeettx, gave the correct answer.

I gave the same advice on SGW.
