new member. Many years ago a favorite uncle would loan me his Wards 16 ga. pump and give me a couple of shells. Well, a few days ago, I ran into a "cherry" Western Field deluxe model 60 in 16, just like that one years ago, so I bought it. It is coming in a few days so I've been reading about the gun and lots of your postings here. Bye, Bye, to the 870/20 . I hunt deer here with both buckshot and slugs, turkey, dove, and squirrels. I have a lot of questions so maybe you can advise me. The gun I'm buying has a modified choke, 26"barrel. Should I have Browning choke tubes installed and who can do it for me? Thanks, gents. |

Birdshot,
Welcome to the club and congratulations on your new purchase.
Why the concern over choke tubes?
I think you will find that the 26" Modified choke on your new gun will serve you quite well for almost anything you want to hunt without the need for choke tubes.
I suspect you will hear from quite a few very experienced shooters on this site that like me carried a Modified gun for a long time without ever feeling the need for anything else.
Best of luck,
Brad |

Yeah, I'll chime in on that one. It's hard to beat a modified choke for an all-around hunting gun (and even informal 16-yd trap). |

Birdshot,
One other note.
Take your new prize out and pattern the gun.
Grab some posterboard and start at 20yds then 30 and 40yds with your turkey load's and your preferred bird load. You will quickly get a good feel for what your throwing out and I suspect will be very satisfied.

The last thing you need to worry about is choke. Mod does it all well enough that it may be a long time (or never) before the choke has as much influence over whether you hit or not than your skill level.
If you just have to spend some money....spend the cost of choke tubes on shells and a decent training session or 2 then go have some fun.

Thanks for the great replies. You folks are right. I should shoot first, then think about choke later. Where is the best mail order house to order 5 or 6 boxes of shells to start playing with. 2 of slug, 2 of buckshot, one each of 1 oz. 7 1/2s, 6s, 5s, 4s. From there I'll go up to 1 1/8 oz. small shot to try. What about buying by the case later? Thanks, birdshot |

I'd say check BassPro. They have pretty good prices on Remington Game Loads. |

I'm going through a search now. I'm 80 miles from a bass pro, so it looks like mailorder for sure. I'm going to save hulls for sure though. |

hi birdshot and welcome aboard:
i am in agreement with the majority on this subject, HOWEVER, no one really addressed the issue of your slug shooting.
you might find that the modified choke to be a bit tight, causing slug deformation, leading to a "keyhole" effect of the slug in flight.
because the chokeing of shotguns seems to be a can of worms, patterning is really the only answer. just don't be surprised if you find yourself looking for an I.C. barrel for slugs and close-in shooting (i.e.skeet,woodcock) |

Ken and Birdshot...
Where y'alls from? I lived in Plymouth, NC until 10th grade, just down the road from Mr. Hurst. In fact, got my retainer for my teeth as a kid from ol' Doc Kilpatrick in Robersonville. In 10th Grade we transferred downstate just a bit to New Bern where I graduated from high school.
Still have family in the area and visit home fairly often, but now live in NW Arkansas where I am semi-retired from law practice and piddle around with business deals mostly in real estate. I was home a couple weeks ago and got to shoot the relatively new sporting clay courses in Washington and Bayboro. Challenging courses, but a fun day with friendly folks!
OK gotta go roll a smoke now and get a little bit of something to sip...old Down East habits die hard!

Hello again. I'm in Roanoke Rapids. When I ordered that shotgun I got all intrested and started searching for info & related. I'm retired, so I hunt a lot, and fish too. Ken, I think you and I howdy'ed on one of the western/bpcr forums in june '05. Thanks for the notice, you see I have a lot of shooting intrests and the time to pursue them. We have a rifle and pistol club here but it is general purpose and you make your own way. Nothing much is organized. Personally I would rather wander in the field all day for a couple of game shots, than shoot a case of clays. And since I enjoy hunting most all my guns get out of doors sooner or later, But this 16 will be pure direct hunting nostalgia for me. I did get a load of baloney from the walmart dummy today, and 2 boxes of remington 1 oz. 7 1/2 black plastic field loads @ $4,47 + tax each. I won't hunt quail because they are scarce here, but dove is coming up soon. Nothing else was available except Remington 1 1/8 loads of 7 1'2s at double the price. I better move to the ammo/reloading forum on ammo questions, eh? Thanks again everyone! |

Hey nossman. I just checked that link and ordered a case of 6s and one of 7 1/2s. That's good, all for one shipping, no tax, and even better than my usual reloading sources, plus the hulls have a good reputation for reloading. I appreciate that advice. Thanks again, birdshot |
