New poster but a long-time lover of the 16 Ga

I have an L.C. Smith Field Grade circa 1915 (#1 modified and #2 light full) that I have been using for skeet, clays and doves. Don't have much trouble finding dove loads but the skeet range near my house requires light loads and size 8 or 9 shot ONLY. What is the best place to get these loads and would a 1 oz dram eq qualify as a light load or do I need to start loading my own rounds?

Thanks in advance!

Welcome t-vo. Very Happy Keeping in mind that you have 90 year old wood, even the 1 oz 1165 'game loads' might be a bit stout. Nothing sweeter than 7/8 oz 16g loads for skeet, clays, dove and quail but I'll let the reloading specialists help in that regard.
As part of a recent trade, I acquired 3 cases of WilliamLarkinMoore's 2 and 1/2" 7/8 oz. 16g loads they have custom loaded here in Phoenix.

The Moore load is supposed to be about 7000 psi. Nice load. You can get light loads at www.polywad-shotgun-shells.com.

If you plan to use factory loads that don't border on custom loadings and that won't cost you an arm and a leg I recommed either the Winchester Super X 2 1/2 dram equivalent at 1170 fps or if you can find the Remington Game load in #8 shot they also make a very good 2 1/2 dram equivalent at 1200 fps. These are both 1 ounce loads but your range should find them acceptable if they allow 12 gauge shooters to use 1 1/8th ounce loads.

I find the Winchester has a bit less preceived recoil than the Remington.

I you decide that you want to shoot this gun a lot you really need to get into reloading. I recommend a 7/8th ounce with a polywad spreader at about 1150 fps for optimum comfort and performance.

The Fiocchi game and target load is about 6800 psi and would be better suited to your L.C. You can find them in #9's once in a while. I don't know about the winchester load but the Remington load is pretty high pressure. If you load your own there are quite a few of low pressure loads to choose from.

I'd start thinking about reloading. Its almost required to get the most out your 16 ga double at an affordable cost of ammo if you live in the USA. I've been using 3/4 ounce reloads for a number of years. They break targets as well or better than any 28 ga. gun I've ever shot. Since your chokes are also a bit tight for skeet, you can easily load polywad spreaders onto the shot for effective patterns out to 25 yards too. Just check my post to Slowpoke Slim on this venue for the recipe. Its an easy one to reload and the componants are now easy to get. Just substitute the Polywad spreader insert for one of the 28 ga card wads. Your LC will become an instant skeet gun and short range quail and woodcock shooter. Good luck.
