Going on a preserve hunt and was wanting to use my 1926 2 1/2" chambered English box lock. Was looking for the above load but no luck with the components on hand. Any downside to just reducing the charge weight? I'm hesitant to modify any published load but I think I will only be reducing pressure and recoil?
I could drop down to 7/8oz or bump up to 1oz but what fun is that.

And will affect the powder residue cleaness.
What components do you have on hand?

Hi Mike:
Powders: Unique, Universal, Green Dot & Longshot
Primers: Winchester, Remington, Fiocchi & Cheddite (in new Cheddite 2 1/2" hulls)
Wads: SG-16 & Remington R-16
Hulls: Remington Game Load, Cheddite, Fiocchi and Federal.
Enough components that I should be able to find something. I'd like to find something in the 1,150 - 1,200 fps range and keep the pressure below 8500.
I hadn't used the Low Pressure group in a long enough time that I can no longer log into my Yahoo group.

Thanks OH, but I'm trying to squeeze another 1/16 oz of shot into this load!

Drop down to 3/4 oz and pick up the velocity, the lighter load will make both you an your ole gun happy.

Thanks Mike: That's where I was going to start.
But, Nick really has my interest peaked. I shot some of his 3/4 oz. test loads through my Sweet 16 when he was developing his wad. Cycled smooth as butter.
Nick, a quick internet search did not turn up any data for this load. Any recommendations?

Using a MEC? My MEC bars are throwing a good 1/16 light with mag shot, so any published 1 oz. load I have loaded ends up being 15/16. See what your 1 oz, bar is dropping. |

Charles Nicolaus knows small loads of small, fast shot, I've personally witnessed what that combo can do. It's most impressive.

Dave, yes, I will be using a MEC. But seeing as it is a hunting load I will measure each charge on a balance beam scale and checked on a digital scale. Old habits die hard.

I know this is more than the 15/16oz load you were looking for but it may work for you. I found this load mentioned on another thread. I loaded up a few and it shot well and broke clays. I believe this was developed by precision reloading.
Ched 2 1/2" Hull
Win 209 Primer
18 Grains Longshot
SG-16 Wad
1oz Lead
1200FPS @ 7270 Avg. PSI
Here's the link to the original post that the load was posted on.

I have had good luck with the R16 wad. I think a 1 oz. Unique load would reduce neatly into the R16 and I would use something like a 209P Remington primer. Should be pretty low pressure and safe.
PM me your e-mail and I'll send along a Microsoft Excel file with more that 8500 16 gauge loads - no charge. |

My original load for cut down shells was 18gr unique , rem sp and 1 oz . I t got verified on the spread sheets under the generics . Should do just fine for what you are looking for with the shot reduction . I used these in Fed cut downs and shot a LOT of these happily before ever evn joining this group . The sp works fine in the short cases with that amt of shot . |
