I have a few winchester polys left. However, I have run out of powder and havnt seen any on any shelves for months. I am leaving for Maine and NEED 16 ga ammo. If Im gonna buy it I want to shoot it and reload them.
What is the best factory stuff for purchasing then reloading. A freind gave me some (100) remingtons that he fired once and they were split like they been shot eight times ???

You can get 16 ga ammo in Maine.

Kittery Trading Post (I-95 Exit 3, Kittery) usually has some.

Cabela's (I-95 Exit 42, Scarborough) carries the Herter's brand shells as well as Winchester, Remington and Federal/Estate. The Herters and Winchester are Cheddite hulls, the Remington are the RGL and the Federal/Estate are the Federal hulls. (Herter's are Cabela's house brand, loaded in Italy for them.)

LL Bean (Exit 17 I-295, Freeport) never closes. They carry RST (2 1/2 inch cheddite hulls) and Remington (Express, maybe some Game Loads).

If you hit a WalMart they might have 16 ga, probably Remington.

Dick's Sporting Goods (South Portland, I-95 Exit 42 or 44) carries a few Remington.

The best buy right now are the Herters, going for under $60/flat. I kinda like the Federal/Estates better than the Herters/Cheddite b/c the plastic in the Herters/Cheddite seems pretty soft and prone to tear. But I wind up with that problem b/c I have to open the loaded shells to cut them down to 2 1/2. I think either will reload fine.

I am not leaving for Maine for two weeks, I was thinking of getting a couple cases before I leave. I have heard that the cheddites have a larger primer pocket ???
I plan on reloading them, so your saying that the Herrera a d or federal (estates) are OK. ?
What is the best 16 ha hull for multiple reloads ?

It's a metric thing.

Depends on who you ask and what kind of load, particularly the wad, you intend to use.

re: Fiocchis - I have no experience with them. Some people report problems with their factory primers in colder weather or with particular guns - the primer cup's metal's hardness can be problematic.

Cabela's and Herters are probably your best bet. they're Cheddites and there is plenty of data for them.

Took my new BPS 16 gauge to the range yesterday to try it and a couple of boxes of Herter's. First time with the Herter's and they worked great. Good bargain from Cabelas.

The Fiocchi will need Fiocchi primers. the Chedite/Herters will work best with Chedite primers but will take Win 209. Feds. are easy. I like the Cheds best
Where are you going in Maine? I assume it is for Grouse and Wood Cock

BD , I don't know what's with the fios -I got a bunch about 6/7 yrs ago from a member . The Chedds work fine . I always keep a sleeve of Fios right at hand , but have never needed them in 12 or 16 ga ... if you are coming to hunt in NY , I would bring ammo with me as 16's can be quite diff to locate . Thw Wallyworlds near me don't have them . Beikirch's (rochester) usually has some Feds . Bass Pro usually has some rgls . Runnings has a few Wins . Louie 's has some - usually spotty anywhere .

Thanks, bought two cases of Herters at Cabelas In Delaware.
The only thing better than Cabelas is tax free Cabelas !!!!
I go to Maine for a week of grouse and woodcock every October. I have a freind who is an outfitter in Danforth (Wilderness Escapes Outfitters). When he is not full we stay with him. When he is full we stay at First Settlers Lodge just North of Danforth.
My favorite week of the year... one truck, two dog boxes, three Britts, two labs, a lot of gear, guns, and ammo. What could be better !
Now onto trying to download the spreadsheets for some cheddite recipes
