My first chance at reloading is coming in the next 2 weeks and my first loads will be wild pheasant. Considering my component options here is the load I am planning to build. I am wondering if anyone has experience with this build and has any comments.
Cheddite Hull
1oz. #5
Herco 20.0
Win 209
Rem SP-16
FPS - 1,220
PSI - 7,300
My only other options in the range I am looking for seems to be:
Federal Hulls
1 1/8 oz. #5
SR 7625 21.5
Win 209
Rem SP-16
FPS - 1,185
PSI - 8,100
I will use factory stuff through my BPS then use the reloads in my Win Mod 12.
Thank you for your thoughts and comments. I am wondering if I should use #6 size shot instead since it is a 1oz load for more shot on target. I will of course pattern after the fact, but just curious what the experts say

I would use an ounce of #6's as my first shot followed by 1 1/8 oz. of #5's. |

I have always liked 1 1/8 oz of 6's but I don't see any real big deal.
It comes down to which load works best for you.
I've killed roosters with both 1 and 1 1/8.
That load with SR7625 and the SP16 wad is not a good load. You will get lots of powder migration because the SP16 swims in the Federal hull and you need large grain powder for that combination to be successful.
I have had great success with 800-X. |

Back in the day I shot a lot of NE Iowa wild pheasants with 20 ga SuperX 1oz of #6. The velocity would be equal or less than your 16 ga loads. I also had 1 1/8 2 3/4 and 1 1/4 oz 3" loads, but these seemed to be overkill. |

Like Mark mentioned , I'd be leery of SP's in straight walls ....never gave it much mind with target loads , but after experiencing a problem 3 mis from the car on the prairie , I'd hesitate . Use gualndi wads from Ball Prod - made to fit . |
