I have.l bunch of 12 ga. AA hulls that are a little short compared to most my AA hulls. I thought I would trim them back to 2 1/2" and load them up. How does every one trim hulls back? What length? Load data? Thanks. |

Woody
I do not trim hulls back, sorry
I shoot 2 3/4 inch hulls in my 2 1/2 inch guns.
I use a light load of clays and the Federal hulls.
No pressure issues, no extraction issues, no issues at all.
I stay around 6000 on my pressures.
I do shoot 2 1/2 ammo in my 16 gauge guns.
And I do shoot 2 3/4 inch 20 gauge reloads in my Ithaca Flues

Number of hull trimmers out there, I bought one I think from someone on this forum, would have to track that info down, it was a good one.
If you roll crimp, may not need to change any of your data, your 2.75" loads may very well fit in a short hull roll crimped. Mine do. |

A friend on cascity.com has a bandsaw set up with a jig or fence to trim shells with one quick zwoop. I have a jig made of some pvc pipe cut to just under 2.5" and slice the excess off with a box cutter. Straight pvc is a fit for 12 ga. but bit big for 16 ga. but I found a grey elbow thing in the electrical section of home depot. Cut it where the bend begins. The distortion at this point holds the rim of a 16 ga. shell. Insert shell, press down on a mousepad, and cut off the excess.
Roll crimping is easy, but for an alternative search "Hartin crimp" in this forum. It can be done on a regular shotgun reloader |

I will show you some of the hulls this Friday when we shoot. All marked heavy. Much shorter that all my other AA so I don't want to change my reloader settings. If I don't trim them I might just load up larger shot than 9's so I do t get all the shot leaking out.
Missed this past Friday shooting. Had to go pick up my powder and shot. Should be good till spring now. Also have a few other questions about hulls I want to run by you. |

Woody; Search "Hartin crimp" in this forum. You can trim your hulls and load and crimp on a regular press without changing the settings. |
