New to this great site for 16 gauge. I have just started reloading shotshells for my 16 ga. I reload several calibers of metallic rounds which brass is fairly standard and easily identified. My first thoughts were to buy commercial ammo and reload those hulls, but I'm having a difficult time positively identifying these hulls in the load data I have. Is there current commercial ammo that is reloadable & if so which types? I had some older Winchester ammo that I ran through & saved but I never noticed there were 2 different shells. Can anyone identify the difference besides one is 2 1/2 & the other is 2 3/4 . The cut away base is from the 2 1/2 hull. Thanks for any help in this matter!
Rick

hope the links worked

Hello and WELCOME to the site and you first posting

First, they are both 2 3/4 inches in length
The 2 1/2 and 2 3/4 markings indicate dram equivilent or power of the ammo.

The "cut hull" is a compression formed hull and folk will covet these Embarassed

The others are regular current winchester hulls and are also listed on the below website.

Both are reloadable

If you go here you will be able to enter 16 gauge and then peel the orange in what type of load you want Very Happy

Again, Welcome
Mike

Thanks Mike
Very helpful link and pointing out the obvious on the length of the hulls. I'm sure I will have more questions
Thanks again

Hello

This is my first post on here as well.

Thanks for asking this question and thanks for the link to the site. I just recently got a cheap "Hardware Store" 16 ga shotgun and have fired an entire five shells from it, into an empty field, just say I fired it. I think I'm going to like this gun and gauge...

I reload for revolvers and .303" Rifle, but not shotgun yet. I do plan on reloading for 16 gauge in the future. Glad to see that I can use IMR 700-X, I have used that for .38 Special and liked it, and it is cheap as well, so this is a plus.
Thanks
Mark

Looks to me that the basewad is grey. The compression formed basewads are red. The same color of the hull. The best way to tell the compression formed hulls from the others is that they are smooth and not ribbed.

The hemispherical shape of the base is a dead giveaway. It can only be the Winchester AA style compression formed, one piece plastic hull. No other ammo manufacturer ever offered a 16 ga compression formed hull or any 16 ga hull with a hemispherical base as far as I know. The gray color is most likely from burned powder residue.

That was my first impression also - burnt powder residue.
