My local gun shop last year was selling Rio for $4.60 per box, very reasonable price. Now the price went up to $6.60 per box no longer reasonable for Rio.

Where can I get inexpensive ammo (not cheap, poor quality)? I am willing to purcase over the internet but am concerned that shipping costs are going to be prohibitive.

Thanks
Doug

Doug here's a thread from the Ammunition Forum http://www.16ga.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1521&start=0
Looks like Bass Pro is a good source right now and NOW is the time to load up with 16g ammo because it's about the only time of the year it can be found discounted. Some of the Texas guys had good luck at BigK (K-Mart)

Thanks. But the closest Bass Pro Shop is 3 hours away. Maybe I should just find a good online shop that is not in Texas and bite the bullet on shipping? Question

When you order from BPS on line, you pay 3.69 x 10 for a flat of remington game loads which will come to 36.90 which will cost you 7.95 for shipping. You get a flat for 44.85 delivered to your doorstep. Order 20 boxes (2 flats) and you pay 8.95 for shipping. Now you have 2 flats for 41.37 each.

This is chepaer than what you were paying for those other shells before the price increase.

I put up a long post about this in that other thread. Good luck.

Doug,
I am in Austin also.
Cabelas in Buda has Estates 2 1/2x1 # 6 for 52.99.
I am going out to Roundrock to Sportsmans Whse this afternoon and check them out. Wholesale on Shotgun shells have gone up about 5.00 per flat because of lead prices, so I doubt we will find any bargains

I just ordered two flats of shells from Bass Pro's website per Wild Weasel's suggestion: $79.20 for two flats of Remngton black game loads plus $8.95 shipping. Great deal and the order went through online, but a couple of minutes ago Bass Pro called to tell me that shipping would really be $39.95. I wondered if they could be dumb enough to do it for $8.95......

Thanks for the great advice....

Does anyone know if Bass Pro Shops charge tax if your in a state where they have a store?

I might have to go to Cabelas to purchase those 2.5 inch Estate shells. The novelity might be worth the trip. I am expecting to hear "What are you goin a hit with those baby shells" or "do you have a toy gun for them toy shells".... Wink

Ready for a laugh? I drove out to Roundrock to Sportsmans Warehouse and they want $10.50 for Federal 16 ga 2 1/2x1 ammo.
The 12 ga stuff was reasonable however. They didnt have any other lead 16g that I saw.
The Estate at Cabelas is 2 3/4 inch, 2 1/2 dram x 1 oz. not 2 1/2 inch.

I retract my comments as 2 1/2 inch shells at $9.60 a box are not worth the laugh, unless that laugh is on me... Laughing for not buying the ammo from Bass Pro shop. Wink

Most likely. The only real way to tell is to call and ask them, or go through the order process and if your not happy, back or cancel out of it.

Able Ammo at ableammo.com has 16ga Federal Game Shok 1150 fps load in number 6, 7.5 and 8 shot for $5.43 per flat. They will ship to your door for about $8.00 bucks.
No luck at Walmart, K Mart or Academy in Houston, Tx.

From August 14-21 Dick's sporting goods in Green Bay, WI and Appleton, WI had Remington GL 1oz loads on sale for $3.28/box. (12's and 20's same price)

This is the cheapest I have seen factory loaded shells.......especially in light of the recent rise in reloading component costs.

I bought 20 flats. Still more left to be had.
20flats will keep me going for awhile and in the process generate a large supply of MT's.

I heard Bass Pro has inexpesive shells but I have to drive 3 hours to get to one.
