I would appreciate any reports on grouse and woodcock hunts this season in Wisconsin.
I plan on going next weekend and taking a Remington Model 31 in 16 with open chokes. Probably take a 28 as well. I am 68 and hunting grouse and woodcock for only my 2nd year. Hunted since a child but never hunted these brds until last year, and can't wait to get after them this trip.

Reports from the DNR and hunting buddies state numbers are down from last year's dismal reports. How long we remain at the bottom of the cycle is anyone's guess. Bring comfortable boots and be prepared to walk, a lot.

Report from Minocqua area is that there aren't a lot of grouse but the woodcock are there. Maybe not height of flight but that can change overnight.

Heading up on Wednesday night through Sunday. Will let you know and good luck!

A buddy was up in Ashland County from Oct 1-5th. Saw enough birds to keep himself and his pooch occupied. Took a couple of grouse each day. He had snow on Saturday and did not see a bird 'til the afternoon that day. Popple cuttings is where he saw the birds.

New report. Buddies are killing birds in the Nicolet, no reports from north central and northwestern. Reno

Was up in the Ashland county area a week ago and I would say grouse numbers are up from the last few years. Did well with 2-3 flushes per hour. Last year I'd walk all day for a couple of grouse flushes.

Was in NE WI (Marinette Cty.) this past weekend. Easily 50+ flushes on Saturday (Sunny) very few shot opportunities though. Sunday there were less flushes (Overcast) but the few opportunities we did get were shot opportunites and ended up taking a couple birds for the group. I was 1 for 4 shots.

Flushed thirteen grouse and three woodcock today. Shot at six and killed five grouse, shot at two and killed one woodcock. I'll be heating the skillet in a day or two. Going out again tomorrow for as long as I can. Reno

Last report for this trip. 15 hours hunting, 19 grouse flushed, 9 shot at, 6 killed. 6 woodcock flushes, 4 shot at, 3 killed. Knees sore, dogs beat, truck tired, spirits lifted and friendships renewed. Reno
