Mike, Dale, Ray and others. Thanks for your concern as to my welfare. The friends on 16 gauge are truly worth knowing.
The Dog is still rovering and there's no underlying issue causing me to sell off the list of guns shown.
The point has been accepted that I'm in the Autumn of my Years and I should pull stuff together and make life easier for those that would be dealing with all the stuff I have around here sometime later. Movin' them out is the first of a long list of possessions that I will distribute out there.
I've had a lifetime of living well, good health, several great women and a whole lot of great bird dogs. The current great woman is the greatest of them all. All three dogs serve me well. I let them know what they mean to me by cleaning the kennels twice a day, mix garlic or Montreal steak seasoning into their food to give them a change of pace, run them free down through the river bottoms and let one of them sleep in my bed. Under the covers, if she wants to.
I've got enough whiskey around here to carry me through my time. I see the Dr. once a year just to let her know I'm still baking bread, making jelly from the fruit of the wild grape, crabapples, high bush cranberries and sumac berries-and anything else I can forage. My yogurt is a regular diet item for me as are eggs and the occasional serving of bacon.
Anyone interested in a LeBlanc Alto Saxophone? |

OK Doggai, sounds like you have a plan, damn good for you. I wish I had your smarts,
may all your days be good ones, with an occasional trip to the DR, to keep her off your back! Merry Christmas from Wyoming!

I think you have the right idea. I hope to whittle down my numbers to a bare few by the time I get your age. Most likely will be limited to my hornet, high standard .22, plastic gun, and model 12/16 and the '42.

Doggai -
I am sorry to hear that you are downsizing due to not being able to get out in the field anymore. I went through the same thing with my Dad a couple of years ago. It was a sad passing of an era for me, but he was OK with it. I think the tragic death of his last best bird dog Tee really finished him for hunting along with his arthritis. He and I both grieved for that dog. But I wanted to say that I hope you are doing well with your retirement.
Anyway, I will send you a PM about the Two Parker VH 16s.
I have a couple of Grade 0 12s; a 1 framed S grade(?) top lever hammergun with 26 inch stub twist Damascus barrels with open chokes that is a blast on quail, woodcock and the thick brush of ruffed grouse. And a 1/2 framed VH grade hammerless with fluid or Vulcan steel barrels and IC/Mod chokes that make it a hell of an all around gun. They are almost the exact same dimensions. I love them and can shoot the hell out of them, but I have been looking for a 16ga VH for quite a while now.
Thanks much,

I did a similar thing mid-life a few years back. I got rid of anything that i didn't use in the past 6 months. EVERYTHING, old paint, kitchen utensils, clothes, field gear, tools and shotguns. Got my safe down to a few model 12's (2 16ga), the model 42, the 16ga O/U, my grandfathers winchester model 74 (.22short), my regularly used side arms, a 22-250 and a 223 and 5.45.
You know when you do as many diverse activities as we all do, its hard to not 'horde' different equipment for various sports/passions. For me it was about simplifying, pairing down just the things we use and need. Its still quite a long list, but there is something liberating. Good luck with the process, we all end up there, some sooner than other, and your kin will appreciate it. |
