I've used Red Dot for 3/4 ounce loads with some success. RGL hull, R16 wad w/ two 28 ga., .135" thick nitro card filler wads in the shot cup, 14.5 grains of Red Dot, and any non-magnum strength 209 primer. A DR16 wad can be substituted w/o fillers w/o any other changes. pressures will be under 10K PSI. Velocities should be at or around 1200 FPS. The loads are fairly clean and break clays with authority.
Red Dot can also be used for 3/4 and 7/8 ounce loads in Cheddite type or Federal hulls as well. 15-17 grains should work with a DR16 wad. Your crimps will tell you if filler wads are needed.
In the past, I've seen data for one ounce loads using Red Dot. I personally wouldn't choose RD as my first choice here. Unique is much better. |

absolutely , what GG said . Been using 13.5 in rgl's with dr's and 3/4/23 gram loads - good enough to work my 48 . There are some loads in OH's data . I've been using it mainly because I could get it easy during the powder crunch and it's come thru fine . |

While I remember using Red Dot for the 16 I also remember there being a fair amount of powder debris in the barrel. |

I use red dot in my 16 loads but only as a last resort. Red dot is a 12 gauge powder IMHO. You won't find may published loads for it. The loads listed above are what I have used. It burns dirty and doesn't seem consistent in my 16. I much prefer green dot or Long shot. Long shot being my absolute favorite in 16 gauge reloads. |

Thanks all for your suggestions-but the only option is factory or use Red Dot. I knthingow there are a lot of better powders for the application, but
Red Dot is the only available powder right now.
Best wishes for the New Year |

I'd load that Red Dot up for my 12 gauge and ride it out until you can score some Green Dot or the like. Powder is starting to show up around here. |

Those RD and E3 loads are pretty hot, pressure-wise.
I continue to be willing to wait on GD to show up. |

Both published in BP's High Performance Loads For Clays booklet, + more on OH's spreadsheets.
16ga, 2 3/4" MutiHull (Ched), MH209 primer, 16.5 RD, SG16, 1oz, 10,700, 1240
all else same except Z16, 10,400, 1210
I'm using a version of this in 24 & 26 gram loads chewing though a batch of old RD for winter targets, its getting the job done but leaving a lot of unburned powder in the barrels. Looking forward to GD's return. |

I used Red Dot almost exclusively when I was shooting skeet with my Sweet Sixteen.
My recipe was:
Win 209 primer
15 gr Red Dot
SG16 wad
1 oz No. 9
I used this load in Remington, Federal, and Winchester hulls. I had to keep the magazine tube oiled and the rings on the light setting to ensure cycling. It was a skeet hammer.

Thanks here also. Red Dot is the only powder to be found here in practical quantities. I'm saving my precious remaining thimblefuls of Unique for the 16ga series at the Grand Nationals, if and when that ever happens.
Until that moment arrives, however, I must resort to Red Dot for everything. |
