I was looking over some photography from a visit over Christmas to where I was hunting just before the holiday.

Maybe only a geologist would find this interesting, but I'm amazed at how wonderfully diverse this country of ours is. Very different and yet still beautiful (with both hunting and fishing! Now, that's my definition of diversity.)

Interesting little thread ... I now can use any rifle thru most of the state - still pick the caplock ... have most of that terrain within 30 miles in any direction . Still , look forward to trying to get out to the plains for a trek with Nick . Just can't do that type scenery here . (if I could just get 3 more inches on the length of my legs !)(no mention of shotguns - would either be a picture of the Davis or my 2 shot m12 )

Loyd3, you make a good case for a Drilling and the inter-mountain west is the best place to use one.

Drilling?
Why wreck a wonderful bird hunt by shooting a deer??
Then you have to quit bird hunting and tend to the cleaning chores.
Very Happy Shocked
Mike

p.s. but if I were in Germany or in a wilderness situation, yes the drilling would be the tool to have

Yep....the 3 barrel gun has got it covered. Woodcock to buffalo and everything in between with the right caliber.

I think anywhere there is a possibility of scaring up a coyote, wolf, hog, javelina (nasty little critters), or smaller predator....the drilling is a handy weapon to have. A combination gun is just the ticket for turkey hunting....how often a yote or fox has come in beyond the scattergun.

Funny you should mention a drilling. I was constantly having to choose between the shotgun or the rifle, depending on the cover I was walking. A nice light little 16x16x6.5 would have been almost perfect! Sadly, the rifle choice would have not worked for this particular season (PA says it must be a flintlock!) but I've been in other circumstances where a drilling would be a magnificent option. Admittedly, deer are a lot more work, but after years of elk hunting, no deer ever seems that heavy to me anymore.

Pennsylvania "chic" with flintlock and shotgun. The guy with the scattergun has to wear orange.

Beautiful pictures Lloyd. Makes me miss Wyoming....then js had to go and mention drillings. I love my drillings....and Jon brings up combination guns. I thoroughly enjoy the one of those I have also. Thankfully no one mentioned medium bore double rifles or I'd get all moony eyed over them too.

I was at Lion Country Supply last summer (?) and saw a drilling reportedly chambered in .25-35 Winchester under twin 16s. It was an unknown maker to me (Funken?) but in pretty serviceable shape. I thought long and hard about that one.

Always enjoy the pics of the west---here in Illlinois shotguns/w slugs are the rule for deer--The land is too flat for rifles.Even at the southern tip where the woods are it's still close up shooting.

hoashooter: One of my favorite western locations. Walking down the bank to fish here has you going by antelope and the occasional rattlesnake. This is rifle country and one of the last good, places...Wyoming! As far as flat goes, this is darn flat in spots. Can't understand why Illinois won't do rifles? Sorry Dale...I know you don't want to let the secret get out.
