I don't usually buy Federal shells but these were $ 9.00 a box. Anyway do most Federal factory crimps look like this. First box I have purchased in 20+ years

These look typical of shells I've seen.
You might look at herters shells at Cabelas for $3 less per box and every bit as good a hull to reload. |

Nothing wrong with those shells.

I think he's referring to the twist in the crimp, caused by the crimp station being slightly out of adjustment- I don't know that it affects the shells performance but they are prettier when the points go straight into the center and just touch the one opposite it. |

Certainly nothing wrong with those crimps , they wouldn't leak shot for sure .
I usually don't buy factory ammo . but I needed some 6's awhile back and bought some Feds in the same blue box and they are crimped like they should be without the swirl . |

Didn't know if the plastics material from this crimp would be weaker
and shorten the life of the hull. Once empty I will be able to tell better
I have always read where Federals were a little more difficult to re-crimp
but like I said not a brand I buy
Thanks |

The reason for the swirl is that the hull only has 1 oz. of shot. If examined you will find the Federal 1 1/8 oz. loads have better crimps and the Federal 1 1/4 oz. magnum 16 loads have an even better crimp. It is the result of making a 1 oz. load fit a hull meant for heavier loads. Typical attempt to make several different 16 ga loads with minimum varieties of hulls and other components.
Having said that those are excellent field loads and work well.

Agree
I have couple flats of these and some are in the older red/navy blue boxes. I just went down to the ammo dump and checked and they are also swirled. That said, as long as they are crimped tight and don't leak it's a non-issue. I've always had good performance from 1 oz. Federals. What's even better is you can load these hulls into beautiful 3/4 or 7/8 oz. loads with the DR wads. |

I doubt the swirl is because they have 1 oz shot them ( the 1 oz loads I have are not swirled ) just a miss adjustment in the machine when they were loaded . All federal lead loads I have seen use the same wad , a 2 piece wad with a post that is adjusted to the load size . They are great loads as stated .
Also the Fed hulls crimp very well when reloaded. for me anyway . |

If you look at most Federal ammo, it has that swirl, I believe you will find that Federal does have a die that spins. It puts the nice round shoulder, it also heats the shoulder up and sets it as it cools. |

The 1oz fed is a great load. I whish they would sell their self adjusting post wad to reloaders. imagine 1 was for all shot volumes . |

Of the 4 or 5 cases of Federal 1 oz I have bought every single shell had a swirl in the crimp, and these were bought at 3 different times.

Like those that have already spoke I have purchased some off the shell and some that guys have in their stock at a discounted price from a few years in the past. Almost all seem to be crimped with a swirl.
I have also noticed on occasion a few boxes of 1 oz RGL with less than perfect crimps.
Never stopped my purchasing of them.
You sota folks need to get out to your gun shows. I have been buying up some smooth sided winnys for $.25 per shell. I almost felt bad buying up some #4 copper plated ones at that price. |

My Federal # 1 buckshot shells have a similar crimp & there's no problem with those. |

Customer:
Hey. These Federal 16 gauge loads I just bought all have swirls in the crimp!!!
Shop clerk:
OOPS!! I must have forgotten to tack on the upcharge for the decorative custom crimp work. That will be another $3.00 per box sir. How do you wish to pay--cash or charge? |
