I'm speaking of shot weight. I love my twice barrels so shooting them safely is my utmost concern. Lead shot could soon be a thing of the past, I bought some tungsten iron shot and I can get close in shot weight using my MEC charge bars. An example 7/8=382.8 gr. My 1 oz. bar drops 375.1 gr. of Tungsten iron. Close enough? Or continue weighing the shot pellet by pellet? |

Tungsten iron is usually very "hard" shot, I would not put it thru my older barrels. Look into Nice Shot for a non-tox lead alternative. Also ITX from Ballistic products.'
'
Nice shot is used as a direct lead substitute, use the same wads, just be sure the you use a load that has 1500 less pressure than max. Because of the higher cost I hand weigh the loads. |

I wouldn't consider any of the "hard" shot to be safe to shoot in any fixed choke barrel. I suppose the improvement in wads and fillers have reduced the damage the shot does to degrees of choke less than modified. But I would shoot nothing harder than Nice or Classic Doubles shot in any gun with a fixed choke. I don't believe lead shot will ever be "a thing of the past" at least West of the Mississippi. |

Ok I just remember when Federal had a Tungsten Iron waterfowl load for 12 ga. It was very hard. But ITX and Nice Shot are both safe in older barrels from what I have read.
ITX 10 that is NOT the ITX13-turkey shot. The 13 shot is hard.
But if you are shooting thru a Citori, as your screen name might indicate, then steel would be fine provided you use the correct wad. |

I planned to use the ITX when hunting Federal Lands and the TX Parks and Wildlife folks are starting to talk about non-tox for doves so I'm betting quail won't be far behind. Thanks for the input, all but 3 of my shotguns have choke tubes, two Browning Superposed 20s and a Beretta 12. The Citori 16 is new so I know steel would be O.K. but I like it and baby it
So back to the original question, how far off load weights do you think is safe? 5 grains, 10 grains? |

Anything under what the listed weight is should be fine. |

+\- 20 grains is acceptable on shot. After that you will begin to effect internal ballistics. |

Am I correct to assume you aren't using recipes for lead shot loads and substituting htl for the lead? The only htl that this can be done is with Nice Shot. With HTL, I take the time to weigh both powder and shot charges and roll crimp. YMMV. |

OH! No, I'm not near smart enough. I'm just trying to speed up the loading process by being able to drop my shot charge from the MEC bar. I will just stick with weighing the shot like I do the powder charge. Just curious. |
