I live in western Mass, and like everyone in the Northeast, we are butt deep in snow and bitter cold. This morning I took the dog for our morning walk at 6.30 on our dirt road that runs , in part, along a swamp and low area. When he started going birdy I looked for rabbit or squirrel tracks .Surprised me when a Woodcock flew up and away from the edge of the road. March 12-18 is normal for us, but I thought the cold and snow would delay things. Guess not. I don't know how he'll survive, but I sure hope he does. Anyone else seeing migrants yet?

I saw my first robin of the yeR on Monday up here in WI. That is always one of those signs of spring when we start to get the robins back.

It will be -6F in the morning in Minneapolis. Any Robin that shows up will probably be a bit miffed at the lack of global warming...

Songbirds began singing some dawn song last week, starting to set up territories but mostly practicing as they have to "relearn" their songs every year. Cardinals and chickadees are the only ones doing it right now. They're keying off of daylight, not temperature. Next week in the 50s here and I expect robbins and the first doves - except for the ones that over wintered here!
Regards,
Jeff

Snowing here again. All the early robins are huddled under my deck.

Feb was the coldest month in recorded weather history in Rochester(usually helped by Lake Ontario) and we are in the foothills So of there . Hasn't even been a squirrel track on nightly walks !.... However , after today , it will incline up towards 50 by Weds and things should start their warmup routines ! Afew Robins is all for now .

I saw a forlorn looking robin standing out in the sleet and snow coming down yesterday. Does that count as a sign of spring?

Have a flock of Cedar Waxwings feeding in the old crabapple tree this week.

And a couple of Robins.

Looks like next week will be warming up so me and the pup will be out looking for woodcock down along the Mason-Dixon line.

Red birds started signing at first light here. They have a regional call unlike the southern cardinals. Reno

I guess it's a sign of Spring. The snow storm that came through yesterday only dropped half as much snow as the one last week.
