The West Texas dove season has been very spotty so far due to an overabundance of rain and consequent scattering of birds.

Tonight was the third time that the weather has cooperated enough to get out.

There was a lesson to be learned and I had to learn it tonight.

First night out, I took a 28 gauge semi-auto with 3/4 ounce loads of # 8's and # 7 1/2's. 47 shells later, I had a total of 8 birds.

Last night, the wind was in the 30-35 MPH range, so I pulled out my Browning competition gun (12 ga) with SK 1 and SK 2. I used Clay ammo's excellent FITASC loads with 1 ounce of 7 1/2's at 1300 FPS. 35 shells for 8 birds.

Tonight, I decided to use the old Ithaca Model 37 in 16 gauge. It may not be the prettiest gun in the rack, but I shoot it exceedingly well, especially since it is a 16 gauge. Using mixed 7/8th ounce # 8 reloads and Federal factory 1 ounce 7 1/2's, I took 15 birds with 32 shots.

Lesson learned, always use a 16 gauge!

Now to load up some more 16 gauge ammo since there is still six weeks left in the season and the weather forcast is finally drying up.
