Hi all, looking at the 16ga Yahoo spreadsheet it states that the SP16 wad is not a good choice for straight walled hulls. You folks have also confirmed this with regards to powder migration.
So........would the SG16 wad be a good choice for use in straight walled hulls? My concern is powder migration when using Longshot powder.
Thanks for all your help, past, present and future.
Best,
Greg |

This info from Yahoo is a bit misleading IMO. The Remington RGL and Express hulls are also straight wall (polyformed) hulls. They have slightly smaller inside diameters than Cheddite type and Federal polyformed hulls. SP16 (and R16) wads are designed to snuggly fit the Remington hulls.
The SP16 and R16 wads also work okay in any polyformed hull with most flake and coarser stick powders but not with fine grained spherical or ball powders. Even so, enough wad pressure can sometimes help splay or expand the wad base skirt well enough to seal the ball powder charges against migration. A snug fitting thin card wad placed directly on top of the powder charge (under the plastic wad base) can do the same thing.
Most of us 16 gauge reloaders with a lot of experience have learned we must be willing to safely try alternatives when the perfect component is not available. Just how it is for us. |
