Can't find a recipe for using international clays in either 1 oz or 1 1/8 oz 16 ga loads. Does anyone have such a recipe?

Thanks,
Keith

Hidgdon site only lists 7/8 oz loads.

International Clays is almost an exact match to PB. You can start there. Personally, I use International for 7/8oz and use Unique or Universal for the 1oz stuff. 1-1/8 (when I shoot it) is a job reserved for Herco.

I believe IC was designed to be an alternative to Green Dot. Both are a little faster than PB. Hodgdon shows some 7/8 oz loads for IC in RGLs and Win/Chedds.
In BPI's 8th edition of The 16 Gauge Manual they show one IC 1 oz load.
Ched hull/Ched 209/18 grains/z16 wad/OS16 11,000 psi 1,400 fps
Several 1 oz Green Dot loads. For Example:
Chedd/Ched 209/18 grains/SG16/OS16. 9,200 1,165
Chedd/Ched 209/20 grains/SG 16S. 10,700 1,310

BPI does not show any 1 1/8 oz loads. You can load IC in 1 oz and I'm sure there is more data. I think there are other powders that are a bit more suitable, especially for 1 1/8. These include Unique, Universal Clays, 20/28, 800X and Longshot. I'm sure there are several more. With the current powder supply we sometimes have to make do. Please share with us what you end up loading.
Regards,
Jeff

take some of our posted loads for instance Mike Campbell fave (green dot). IC should cross over with that nicely .

Thanks for all of the help, guys. I inherited almost 4 pounds of IC, but don't guess that I will try to use it in my 16 ga reloads. Just trying to find a use for it.

Keith, it's a stellar powder for 7/8 oz 16 gauge loads. Just not a great match for 1 oz.

Would you please expound on that comment. I don't think I've used any BP data but there is a lot available.

[When I have powder] I load 7/8 ounces in my 12 ga. I use them for targets and they're a real pleasure to shoot - soft recoil, easy on the gun, and you get 1/8 ounce of lead back for free - 1/4 ounce if you compare it to a standard 12 ga target shell with 1 1/8 ounces of shot. That adds up: Instead of 400 1 ounce shells out of a 25# bag of shot, you get 457 - two boxes plus of shells just by cutting 1/8 ounce from each shell.

The way I look at it, if I'm shooting at targets and can't hit with 7/8 ounce, I probably can't hit with 1 or 1 1/8. OTOH, if I can hit with 7/8, I surely can with 1 and more.

YMMV.

I load Ic for 7/8 in 16 and 3/5 in 20.
When and if I can find it. Which I haven't been able to for nearly 2 years.

I use it for my 7/8 and 3/4oz reloads in 16ga. Now if I can just find some DR16s.

Nice clean loads for those light loads. the 7/8 oz recipe will cycle my A5 on light settings.
I believe I got that recipe from 3crosses. works great.

[quote="JNW"] "I believe IC was designed to be an alternative to Green Dot...".

Yes, International Clays was designed to directly compete w/ Green Dot but has always been more expensive. Hodgedon claims it is cleaner burning. This is no longer as true as it was after Alliant cleaned up it's Dot line of powders over a decade ago.

Green Dot is a bit denser than IC, so thrown charges of GD will weigh a bit more all else being equal. However, charges thrown from the same bushing produce approximately equal ballistic results. Minor average differences in pressures and velocities are unimportant unless the thrown charges are already at or very near maximum for the load design.
