I've been roll crimping for a short chambered model 12. It shoots awesome but when I roll crimp loads with fiber basewad/gas seal the ends of the hulls melt or burn some. Does not happen when I use a load with SP16 wad. Is that common? The hulls I'm using are estates trimmed to 2 1/2" with blue dot. |

It is the Blue Dot . Can you find a load using a faster powder that produces similar results? |

Any suggestions? I'm loading heavier 2 1/2" shells for turkeys. The load I'm speaking of shoots good. The 1 1/8" with the SP16 wad shoots good but not quite as good as the above load. That is about 600 grains of 6's. A little lighter load than the 1 3/8 oz 16gaDavis had tested. I dropped the powder .5 grain and dropped the shot a little. |

It's for turkeys. I shooting closer to 575 grains in the short shell. If you were following 16gaDavis awhile back he loaded up with 1 3/8 oz and had it tested. Based on loads out of a older Lyman book.
I believe he set that load up for pheasants but I'm not sure. Believe me it's not my everyday load. But I find the load not bad to shoot at all. But I've never been recoil sensitive. |

hey Wood - try the 20 grn Unique load with 11/4 . Will gain a little space in the case with the lighter powder load . May have to still use the plastic OP and a fiber filler - haven't looked at it for space for roll crimping . That 1st load we tried in the short case had low antimony shot , so the 13/8 fit due to it not taking up as much space . Mag shot wouldn't fit . You may be limited to 11/4 - nothing wrong with that out of the gun you have . ( I need a REAL turkey to do the final test !) |

I will try the unique load too. I really like how the BD/fiber wad load patterned. The BD/ SP16 wads you gave me patterned almost as good. Both turkey killers. If I drop it to 1 1/4 oz no big deal. I've killed a bunch of turkeys with 1 1/4 oz with a 20 gauge.
When my chance came on a turkey I didn't have my 16 ga. Had the 12 ga. Going to carry the 16 rest of season. It's replacing my 20 ga. Turkey killer for 2nd half of the season. |
