The latest bpi load of the week installment has some interesting loads among it if anyone has not seen it. 16 gauge of course. |

I have always thought the fps on many of their posted loads are extreme, however the steel shot loads caught my eye. I get tickled by their occasional 1700 fps lead loads, does anyone actual shoot those? |

Not sure but, does anyone really think these are good loads? |

When I was going to school there were considered laws of physics that were unchangeable. I see loads listed that propel 437 grains of shot plus wad to velocities approaching 1500 fps. All with pressures less than 11,000 psi. This level of ballistics is similar to what is obtained with centerfire rifles involving pressures 4 times as high. I have not tested (nor do I intend to) these loads so I can't refute their validity- but I will say this: Not in my gun. |

have tried some of the loads of theirs from their prev listings - that's where those fast 20/28 loads that we talked about started . Can't say I do or don't like them . My worry would be that they are computer generated and not off the Pressure gun . My other caution is always recoil which I just got another bout of - back to lite loads at reg velocities .If we had a Dove season , I'm all over those loads . Nick is our champion for liter/fast loads . I use them for my trips to the Rez , but don't shoot as good as I used to and still feel fine with those ole 23/4 - 11/8 loads - considerably slower ! |

Are those guys exclusive or near-exclusive dealers in Cheddite/Rio primers? Haven't seen them here in Eastern Nebraska (maybe I'm just missing them) but are you finding them elsewhere? A friend in Northern Iowa has found Cheddite 209s near where he lives. Lots of data using Fiocchi/Cheddite primers that isn't directly useful to me but is at least a starting point. |

the first load is 50.0grs (!) Longshot with 1oz. of shot. Fifty grains?!?! The only Longshot loading experience I have is with the 10ga. and I found Hodgdon's web data way too hot. I tried a load with Longshot off their site and had to back off from 38.0 grs (max was 38.6grs) down to 35.0 grs to equal factory speeds of 1210 fps with 2 1/4oz. I don't think I could bring myself to load 50.0 grs Longshot in a 16ga. |

I hope not . Besides stupid velocities , possibly down right dangerous |

In the last couple months I have been experimenting with one of BPI's loads which is similar to one of the listed ones on their load of the week. It is 26 gr. green dot with 5/8 oz lead and nitro card and sg16 wad. It does chronograph about 1725-1750 fps. I have used 7.5 dia shot, but did order some #9 to test here in the near future. The load will take down clay targets easily, and I have shot a few jackrabbits with it. Because I am not so skilled with clay shooting, for me it was easier to hit them at a greater distance because my lead for me was easier to deal with. I did some patterning at 35 yards, and it was reasonable with a full choke barrel and 5/8 oz #7.5 shot. I wonder if Charles Hammack uses a load that is similar since he has advocated high velocity - low weight payloads. |

Carlos,
I would only disagree in the case of steel. My understanding is speed kills with steel. 1500-1600 fps is typically what my waterfowl friends throw at med ducks up to large geese. Any steel loads above 1500 get my attention. This is only the 3rd and 4th combo I've seen to meet that standard in 16 gauge.
The lead and itx stuff just scares me at those speeds! |

My 16 GA upland bird hunting loads are 3/4 oz., 7/8 oz., 1 oz. and for late season pheasant 1 1/8 oz. all of which travel just over 1200 fps. These loads in appropriate shot sizes have worked for me for many years. |

My suggestion is learn to wingshoot very well with the safe, sane loads you find pattern best out of the gun you shoot best. Good shooting solves most problems.
