My sweet 16 has developed an issue, it won't consistantly eject the hull. This is not an issue with the action not fully cycling but more an issue with it not keeping the hull caught by the ejection claw I think? I installed a new ejection claw and it works 80-90% of the time which is unsatisfactory. While apart I cleaned all components and reoiled it. I've shot A5s 40 years with this issue never surfacing before. It's crossed my mind the shells I'm using could be the issue but I kinda doubt that although when it first began I had a few remington shells that worked perfectly. I'm currently shooting both Fiocchi and Noble sport with the Fiocchi shells the only ones I've tried with the new ejection claw.
Any ideas?

Cleaning the chamber REALLY good was one of the first things I did. I'm going to change barrels before I go shooting again. This issue seemed to begin when I started going to the sporting clay range preparing for dove season back in July. I don't recall an issue when I was shooting last year. I think if it were very bad I'd recall problems, which I don't. |

Regarding the spring, once I reassembled the gun I compared the ejector claw spring tension to the other A5s on hand and it felt comparable to the others.
To be honest I didn't give the ejector mechanism on the left much attention. I cleaned the bolt assembly good with brake cleaner and then oiled it. I did look at the left side and it seemed to work as I thought it should, that was the extent of it. |

Sounds like you have given this prudent thought !
Some guns just prefer a certain brand of ammo.
Good luck on your adventure

Thanks to all who've responded. Rudolph31 your post enabled me to find the culprit.
Oddly enough the left hand ejector claw was broken off. To be honest looking for a broken piece hadn't occurred to me. After looking at the repair manual and then looking at another A5 the issue was quite obvious.
Thanks again,

Glad to help! Funny, I've got a 1947 12 gauge Auto-5 that wouldn't cycle anything but Federals. I decided to just feed it what it likes -- until a friend looked inside and discovered the left extractor broken off. ( Hey, I'M supposed to be the expert!)
Anyway, if your gun is pre-1958, you'll have to modify a new extractor or buy an old style on eBay or from Numrich. The FSM will show you how. |
